BALTIMORE, Md. — Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco was thrilled with the gift he received from Browns rookie defensive tackle Phil Taylor at the end of the game: a jump on fourth-and-2 that cost the Browns a chance at a comeback in the 20-14 loss.

“I don’t know if I’ve ever been in position for that to happen,” Flacco said. “It’s never worked.”

With two minutes left in the game, the Ravens were clinging to the 20-14 lead and facing the crucial fourth down at the Browns’ 37. Everyone in M&T Bank Stadium knew the Ravens were going to try to draw the Browns offsides.

“In the timeout, we talked about the potential of that happening,” said coach Pat Shurmur. “I’ve seen it, and we had a nice huddle to discuss that might happen. And then you’re out there playing and you can’t do that.”

Sure enough, Taylor bolted off the line and wrecked the Browns’ hopes of tying or winning the game.

“We got them,” Flacco said. “[Coach] John [Harbaugh] was like ‘there’s no way they jump.’ In that situation, we got fortunate.”

Immediately afterward, linebacker D’Qwell Jackson put his hands on Taylor’s head and offered words of encouragement.

“He said ‘hold your head up,’” Taylor said. “It’s tough. Of course you feel bad, but you’ve just got to move on.”

Flacco executed the fake perfectly, then took a knee three straight times to end the game.

“They gave us a first hard count and we stayed onsides,” Taylor said. “The second time, I jumped.”

	Jackson defended the mistake.

“We talked about it before the play, but it was the first time he had been in that situation,” Jackson said. “I was telling him, ‘You played a great game,’ and it’s a great learning experience for him. You hate to be that guy. I had my fair share of mishaps today, but you play in this league a long time and things like that are going to happen. You just have to be able to learn from them and try to minimize those mistakes.”

Added cornerback Sheldon Brown: “The only way to learn in this game as a young player is to be out there doing certain things. Unfortunately it happened, but we have to play faster and start faster. You can never point the blame or the finger at one person.”

Jackson said the bright side is that Taylor played the whole season and gained valuable experience as a rookie.

“He’s done a tremendous job all year,” Jackson said.

TDs on Jackson: Jackson gave up the Ravens’ two touchdown passes, a 5-yarder to tight end Ed Dickson and a 42-yarder to running back Ray Rice. Rice caught the ball at about the 25 and ran it in.

“Ray is a great back,” Jackson said. “He understood how I was manipulating a lot of running backs throughout the year. Being in man coverage, I’m able to hug. He took a chance. He got out real fast and once his feet are moving and he’s downhill, I tried to close the gap as quick as I could but it was a great ball by Flacco and there was no chance I was catching him.”

On the one to Dickson, Jackson had his back to the ball when it floated to Dickson.

“I’ve just got to close the air between him and the ball and I’ve just got to do a better job covering,” Jackson said.

Steelers game moved to later start: As a result of the NFL’s flex scheduling, the Browns-Steelers game Sunday at Cleveland Browns Stadium has been moved from 1 p.m. to 4:15 p.m.

Cribbs TD: Wasted in the loss was Josh Cribbs‘ career-long 84-yard punt return for a touchdown that pulled the Browns to within 20-7 in the third quarter. It was his third career punt return for a score and 11th total return touchdown of his career, which is the fifth-most in NFL history. It was his first punt return for a touchdown since the 2009 season opener, when he returned one 67 yards against Minnesota on Sept. 13. Cribbs has totaled 20 career touchdowns; two rushing, three on punt returns, seven receiving and eight on kickoffs.

“It felt great,” said Cribbs, who was questionable for the game with a groin injury. “‘I saw all of the great blocking around me. From there, it was easy. It was just a walk in.’”

Hillis sensational: Browns running back Peyton Hillis followed his 99-yard game in Arizona with a 112-yard effort against the Ravens’ second-ranked run defense. Heading in, the Ravens had allowed only eight 100-yard runners in its previous 81 games and 10 in its past 98 games. One of those was Hillis’ 144-yard outburst here last season.

“It was tough [this season] because I knew I was hurt and I was injured and trying to go back out there and trying to play when you’re not 100 percent is tough because you know you really can’t help your team,” he said. “Then a lot of people are doubting you or thinking that you’re not trying to play hard. I love this team and I love going out there and playing football. It?s what I love to do. I don’t like people questioning that because my heart’s big and I want to do great things for this team.”

Hillis hobbled off for one play with an ankle injury but came right back in.

“My ankle popped there for a second,” he said. “I got a little concerned, but it wasn’t hurting. So they just took me to the sideline and cut off the tape and [re-taped] me then I was fine after that. I was just a little worried and concerned I didn’t hurt anything, which I didn’t.”

Hillis passes: Hillis tried to make something happen on back-to-back passes in the fourth quarter, but Wallace threw too short to him on third-and-5 at the 45 because of pressure by Ed Reed and Paul Kruger, and he was stopped for no gain on fourth-and-5.

“I think they were pretty much playing zero coverage there toward the end trying to hurry up and get the ball out,” Hillis said. “The second one that came to me, I caught and maybe I could have made something happen, but the defender was on me pretty quick. And the first time, if the ball got to me I think something great would’ve happened. But Seneca did a great job. He threw off his back foot there but he made a lot of crucial throws throughout the whole game, so you’ve gotta be proud of him about that.”

Maynard superb: Punter Brad Maynard recorded three more punts inside the 20-yard line. On the season, he has placed 30 of his 75 punts inside the 20 and has zero touchbacks. His inside-the-20 total is the second-most in Browns history. Bryan Wagner holds the record with 32 in 1989.

Draft order: The Browns’ draft order ranges from No. 3 to No. 9. Here are the scenarios:

If the Browns lose to Pittsburgh and finish with a 4-12 record:

They draft No. 3 if Jacksonville beats Indianapolis and Minnesota beats Chicago.

They draft No. 4 if Jacksonville beats Indianapolis and Chicago beats Minnesota.

They draft No. 4 if Indianapolis beats Jacksonville and Minnesota beats Chicago.

They draft No. 5 if Indianapolis beats Jacksonville and Chicago beats Minnesota.

If the Browns beat Pittsburgh and finish with a 5-11 record:

They draft anywhere from No. 6 to No. 9, depending on several outcomes.

TONY GROSSI SCOUTS THE BALTIMORE RAVENS

Kickoff: Browns at Ravens, Saturday 1 p.m. in M&T Bank Stadium, Baltimore.

Record: 10-4.

Most recent game: Lost to Chargers, 34-14, Dec. 18, in San Diego.

Coach: John Harbaugh, 46-23, fourth year.

Series record: Ravens lead, 18-7.

Most recent meeting: Ravens won, 24-10, Dec. 4 in Cleveland.

League rankings: Offense is 15th overall (16th rushing, 16th passing), defense is third (second rushing, fifth passing) and turnover differential is plus-1.

Offensive overview

Despite having all the pieces, they still aren’t able to push the pedal to floor and score like the elite offenses. They’ve gone four games in a row without scoring more than 24 points — hitting that figure in wins over the Browns and Colts, but scoring only 30 combined against the 49ers and Chargers. This inconsistency might only be a concern to them in the postseason when they get hooked up in a scoring duel with the likes of New England and Houston, or New Orleans or Green Bay in the Big Game. Otherwise, they can win by handing off and throwing to Ray Rice and dumping to tight ends Ed Dickson and Dennis Pitta and receiver Anquan Boldin. The long game to rookie Torrey Smith and, some day, Lee Evans, is what may put them over the top.

Defensive overview

If they don’t get pass pressure, they are as vulnerable as any defense. In their four losses, they have registered only five sacks. The Chargers took command early by hitting them with quick passes and screens. The pressure was lacking even though they finally got linebacker Ray Lewis back after missing several games with turf toe. Their cast of characters is well-known and widely feared — tackle Haloti Ngata, rush linebackers Terrell Suggs and Jarret Johnson, safety Ed Reed. Bernard Pollard has been an enforcer at strong safety. The cornerback position suffered when Lardarius Webb was reduced to nickel duty. Rookie Jimmy Smith was picked on in his first NFL start.

Special teams overview

Kicker Billy Cundiff is 27-of-36 in field goals with a long of 51 yards. He has missed three of his past five attempts, and his nine misses match the league’s most. Despite Cundiff’s 42 touchbacks, the Ravens are only 29th in average drive start after kickoffs — which means they give up some healthy returns when Cundiff doesn’t boot it out of the end zone. Punter Sam Koch is 10th in gross average (46.6 yards) and 12th in net (39.7). David Reed is back on kick returns after losing the job earlier because of fumbles. Webb hit the Browns with a 68-yard punt return but is hobbled.

Players to watch

Running back Ray Rice: His record 204 yards rushing in the first meeting vaulted him up the NFL leaderboard. He’s now fifth with 1,086 yards and 10 TDs on the ground, and added two among his team- high 71 receptions.

Linebacker Terrell Suggs: He was kept fairly at bay in the first meeting, netting only one sack. His 13 lead the AFC and tie for fifth in the NFL.

Safety Ed Reed: Three of his eight career interception returns for touchdowns have come against the Browns. He, too, was relatively quiet in the first meeting.

Injury report

PK Cundiff (calf) has played but not practiced the past two weeks. CB Webb (toe) was limited all week but played in nickel.

Small world

Among the many players, coaches and executives who formerly worked or played for the Browns are: General Manager Ozzie Newsome, senior personnel assistant George Kokinis, defensive line coach Clarence Brooks, defensive coordinator Chuck Pagano, director of pro personnel Vince Newsome, vice president of football administration Pat Moriarty, assistant special teams coach Marwan Maalouf and special teams coordinator Jerry Rosburg. . . . Receiver Lee Evans attended Bedford High School. . . . Safety Haruki Nakamura is a Cleveland native who attended St. Edward High School. . . . Scout Jack Glowik is a Cleveland native who attended Benedictine High School. . . . Linebackers coach Dean Pees is a former head coach at Kent State.

That’s all the news for today.

–>

(Sports Network) – The Baltimore Ravens have consistently been one of the
better teams in the NFL since John Harbaugh took over as head coach in 2008,
but the club has never won five straight games during his four-year tenure.

That could change with a victory this Sunday night over the hosting San Diego
Chargers, and it would also punch the Ravens’ ticket to a fourth straight
playoff appearance.

Baltimore does figure to have its hands full with a San Diego club that is
fighting for its chance at a playoff spot, a lifeline it would like to extend
with a third straight victory this weekend.

The Ravens easily handled the winless Colts, 24-10, last Sunday to win for the
sixth time in seven games and keep pace with Pittsburgh for first place in the
AFC North. Baltimore and the Steelers are two of four teams in the AFC that
hold 10-3 records, but the Ravens do hold the inside track for the division
crown thanks to a pair of victories over Pittsburgh this season.

The AFC South champion Houston Texans and East-leading New England Patriots are
also 10-3.

“The AFC is very competitive,” said Ravens running back Ray Rice. “We have
control of our own destiny. We’re in our driver’s seat, but at the same time,
other teams are playing good football as well. So you hope a team drops one. We
don’t say help because we feel like we control our own destiny. As long as we
keep winning, we’ll be fine.”

Baltimore has won 17 of its past 18 at home, but brings a 3-3 road record in
2011 into this meeting. Still, the Ravens can win five straight in the regular
season for the first time since Oct. 29-Nov. 26, 2006, which was also the only
other season that the Ravens ever posted an 11-3 mark after 14 games.

Baltimore can officially lock up a playoff spot with a victory in this game,
but can also get in with a loss by the New York Jets and either Oakland or
Tennessee. The Ravens are also in if both the Raiders and Titans lose or tie,
but Harbaugh is only worried about what his team does on the field.

“That’s the object — just to win the next game more than anything, probably,”
the coach said on Monday. “If that happens, we pretty much know where the
chips are going to fall. So, we try to control what we can control, and
obviously we’ve got a big challenge this week.”

The Chargers wish they were in the same boat as the Ravens, but a six-game
slide from Oct. 23-Nov. 27 took such control out of their hands. San Diego has
turned things around with consecutive victories to get to 6-7 on the season,
but sit two games behind both AFC West-leading Denver and Jets, who hold the
conference’s sixth and final playoff spot.

Like the Ravens, the Chargers cruised to a victory last weekend, besting
Buffalo by a 37-10 margin. San Diego used a fake punt that set up a score and a
pick-six from safety Steve Gregory to pull away in the third quarter, while
also getting three touchdown passes from quarterback Philip Rivers.

“It was good to win a game,” Rivers said. “Win two in a row and try to keep it
rolling next week against Baltimore.”

San Diego picked up its 400th victory in franchise history and improved to
17-2 in December under head coach Norv Turner. It will be playing its final
home game of the regular season this weekend before road tests at Detroit and
Oakland.

SERIES HISTORY

The Ravens grabbed a 4-3 lead in their overall series with San Diego by virtue
of a 31-26 win in the most recent meeting between the teams, which took place
at Qualcomm Stadium in 2009. The victory was Baltimore’s fourth in five
matchups with the Chargers since 2000, with San Diego’s lone triumph during
that span a 32-14 home decision in 2007. The Chargers are 3-2 all-time as the
host in this set, however.

Turner has split four previous encounters with the Ravens as a head coach,
which includes a 1-1 mark while at the helm of the Washington Redskins from
1994-2000. Harbaugh won his only prior head-to-head battle with both the
Chargers and Turner with his team’s 2009 result.

WHEN THE RAVENS HAVE THE BALL

Baltimore put up 10 points in the first quarter last weekend versus the Colts
and never looked back on the way to posting 358 yards of offense. That was
about par for the course for the Ravens’ 14th-ranked unit (346.0 ypg), a group
that is led by talented running back Rice (1029 rushing yards, 62 receptions).
He ran for 103 yards against Indianapolis and scored his 12th total touchdown
of the season, one shy of a club single-year record. It marked the first time
that the back has run for 100 yards in consecutive games, and he also led the
Ravens with six catches. On the season, Rice leads the NFL with 1,622 yards
from scrimmage. Quarterback Joe Flacco (3122 passing yards, 15 TD, 9 INT)
threw for 227 yards with a pair of touchdowns, finding wide receiver Torrey
Smith (37 receptions, 6 TD) for a short score in the first quarter and tight
end Dennis Pitta (31 receptions, 2 TD) in the third. Flacco went over 3,000
yards passing for a third straight season, while Smith tied Jamal Lewis’ club
rookie record for touchdowns in a campaign set in 2000. Smith and Anquan Boldin
(55 receptions, 3 TD) had five catches each last week, with Boldin adding a
game-high 57 yards receiving. Baltimore has allowed just four sacks during its
four-game win streak.

The Chargers rank in the top 10 in both total defense (8th overall, 330.5 ypg)
and against the pass (7th, 201.5 ypg), but have struggled versus opposing
ground games. San Diego is giving up 128.9 yards per game in that department,
tied for 23rd in the NFL. The Bolts did hold the Bills to under 100 yards
rushing and picked off quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick twice, with safety Eric
Weddle (73 tackles, 7 INT) also grabbing a pick in addition to Gregory (47
tackles, 1 INT), who led the club with seven tackles. San Diego’s secondary,
led by corners Antoine Cason (44 tackles, 1 INT) and Quentin Jammer (41
tackles), did struggle against Bills No. 1 receiver Steve Johnson, however,
with the wideout logging four catches for 116 yards. Still, San Diego did not
allow Buffalo to score in three of the four quarters and has shut out its
opponent in five of its past six periods played. Linebacker Antwan Barnes (32
tackles, 7 sacks) had a sack versus the Bills and inside starter Takeo Spikes
(91 tackles, 1 sack) added five tackles. Fellow inside linebacker Donald Butler
(80 tackles, 1 sack, 1 INT) is one of San Diego’s top tacklers and tackle
Antonio Garay (48 tackles, 2 sacks) leads the club’s front three.

WHEN THE CHARGERS HAVE THE BALL

San Diego’s eighth-ranked offense (388.1 ypg) is coming off a 366-yard
performance and is looking to make some history this weekend. Rivers (3745
passing yards, 22 TD, 17 INT), running back Ryan Mathews and wide receiver
Vincent Jackson are all within reach of giving the club a 4,000-yard passer,
1,000-yard rusher and 1,000-yard receiver for the third time in club history,
while tight end Antonio Gates (53 receptions, 6 TD) needs five catches to
surpass Charlie Joiner (586) for the most in club history. Rivers and Gates
hooked up for two touchdowns versus the Bills, with the tight end leading the
team with seven catches for 68 yards. Jackson (53 receptions, 952 yards, 8 TD)
added five catches for 55 yards, while Mathews (943 rushing yards, 45
receptions, 4 TD) donated six catches while rushing for over 100 yards for a
third straight game. LaDainain Tomlinson was the last Charger to do so in four
straight, back in 2007. Also, Jackson is looking to become the first Chargers
wide receiver since Tony Martin in 1996 to post a 10-touchdown season. Malcom
Floyd (25 receptions, 2 TD) also serves as a top target for Rivers, while
running back Mike Tolbert (385 rushing yards, 6 TD) is a red-zone option.

The Chargers likely won’t have such an easy time moving the ball this weekend
against a Ravens defense that ranks third overall in the league (278.1 ypg),
second against the run (85.8 ypg) and third in scoring defense (15.5 ppg). With
star linebacker Ray Lewis (68 tackles, 2 sacks, 1 INT) missing the past four
games with a foot injury that could again hold him out this weekend, outside
linebacker Terrell Suggs (58 tackles, 13 sacks, 2 INT) has been on a tear.
Suggs logged three sacks versus the Colts last weekend and set a club record
with three forced fumbles, though the Ravens weren’t able to recover any of
them. He has set a new career high in sacks for as season and leads the NFL
with six forced fumbles. Suggs leads a defense that held the Colts to just 167
yards of offense, including 47 in the first half, and leads the NFL with 45
sacks. Safety Bernard Pollard (58 tackles, 2 sacks, 1 INT) had an interception
last weekend and defensive end Cory Redding (34 tackles, 4.5 sacks) also got to
the quarterback. Safety Ed Reed (43 tackles, 1 sack, 3 INT) leads a secondary
that may be without cornerback Lardarius Webb (62 tackles, 1 sack, 4 INT) due
to a toe injury, though both he and Harbaugh are hopeful he can play. If not,
rookie Jimmy Smith (6 tackles, 2 INT) would start alongside Cary Williams (62
tackles). Paul Kruger (12 tackles, 4.5 sacks) is also a pass-rush specialist
alongside inside linebacker Jameel McClain (71 tackles, 1 sack, 1 INT), who led
the Ravens with eight tackles last week.

KEYS TO THE GAME

The Ravens’ offense goes through Rice, the only player in the league with at
least 1,000 yards rushing and 500 yards receiving this season. He leads all NFL
running backs with 593 receiving yards and is looking to become the fourth
player since 1970 to post three seasons in a row with at least 1,200 rushing
yards and 500 receiving yards.

Ravens kicker Billy Cundiff made his only field goal attempt and hit all three
extra points last weekend, but was questionable to play due to a calf injury.
Cundiff didn’t handle the kickoffs during the second half due to the ailment,
something that bares watching on Sunday night.

The Chargers do have the edge in the passing game, and an injury to Webb could
open things up for Jackson and Floyd. Gates should also find some room to work
with in the Ravens secondary, while having a solid receiver out of the
backfield in Mathews will give Rivers a safe play to avoid Baltimore’s
pressure. The Ravens’ linebackers will need to watch for screens and keep an
eye on Mathews to avoid big plays.

OVERALL ANALYSIS

A pair of teams who also finish strong makes for an exciting matchup this
Sunday night. Both clubs have plenty to play for and are very similar in terms
of offense. Mathews and Rice are both playmakers, with the latter probably
holding the edge, while Rivers is likely to make more plays with his arm than
Flacco. That means the difference could come down to defense, where Baltimore
excels and can force Rivers into making some of the same mistakes that have
led to him leading the AFC in interceptions.

Chargers’ next opponent

Baltimore Ravens (10-3)

5:20 p.m., Sunday, Qualcomm Stadium

The Ravens have lost only three games. Each time, they were on the road. For all their success, the Ravens are no better than 16-14 in away games under head coach John Harbaugh.

So, ahem, there’s that.

About the last thing the Chargers needed to come along at this particular point – the virtual point of no return in terms of postseason contention – was a game with the smash-mouth Ravens. Baltimore’s a good opponent to have when it’s early in the season and you’re trying to measure yourself against the league’s better franchises – especially if you’re wondering about your own toughness — but not when you’re under .500 in mid-December and possibly one loss from elimination.

Baltimore’s not without a sense of urgency, either, despite a sweep of the arch-rival Pittsburgh Steelers and unbeaten record within the AFC North. The Ravens are one of four AFC teams at 10-3 and all too aware of the importance of home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. Those two wins over the Steelers won’t mean much, either, if Pittsburgh finishes with a better record than Baltimore.

When last the Chargers faced the Ravens two years ago – see Series History below – Baltimore was built around (now) 12-time Pro Bowl linebacker Ray Lewis. He’s missed four games – all Baltimore wins — with turf toe.

The Ravens are the NFL’s best defense against the pass and second-best against the rush, allowing an average of 15.5 points per game and an opponents’ third-down percentage of just 28.7. If anything, this year’s ravenous Ravens seem even more on the offensive when on defense.

Baltimore’s 8-5 in prime-time games during Harbaugh’s tenure, 4-1 in “Sunday Night Football’ affairs.

Three players to watch

Terrell Suggs, LB: You can toss a dart at the Ravens’ defensive lineup and hit somebody you want to avoid in your game plan, but even with Ed Reed at safety and Haloti Ngata at nose, the first force to be reckoned with is Suggs on the pass rush. Three times this season, he’s recorded three sacks in a game, putting him within two quarterback drops of the team record of 15. In addition to three picks Sunday, he also forced three Indianapolis Colts fumbles. He’ll be dancing with a former Ravens teammate Sunday night in Jared Gaither, now the Chargers’ starting left offensive tackle.

Joe Flacco, QB: Of the top 26 quarterbacks in the NFL in completion percentage, 25 are doing better than Flacco, who’s hit just 56.6 percent of his passes. He’s no higher than 21st in passer rating at 79.9. But there’ll only be two quarterbacks in the Super Bowl, and nobody would be surprised if Flacco is one of them. Why worry so much about passing stats, too, when your primary job is getting the ball to …

Ray Rice, RB: This not a height joke, but the 5-foot-8 Rice actually had been running well below the radar until most recently breaking off consecutive 100-yard games – incredibly, the first time he’s done that in his career. Rice leads the NFL with 1,622 total yards from scrimmage, including 10 rushing scores and two TD receptions. He’s now working behind one of the league’s premier fullbacks, Vonta Leach.

Bernard Pollard knows one style of play, and it’s not always a popular one. But it’s one that makes him a perfect fit with the Baltimore Ravens.

He calls it old school.

Wide receivers call it a prelude to pain killers.

“I’m an old-school football player,” Pollard said in a phone interview. “I’ll hit you when you’re going out of bounds. I’ll hit you when you come down field. If you’re in the way, you’re going to get hit. I’m just an old-school type football player. The league can try to change rules and everything else, but you can’t call this smash-mouth football if you’re worried about a penalty.”

That quote is Pollard in a nutshell: Aggressive, straight-forward and fully comfortable in his style. The Fort Wayne South Side High School alumnus needed four games to crash – and that is the best word – the Ravens’ starting lineup.

Now he’s a tandem with the Ravens great safety Ed Reed, and loving it, as the Ravens (9-3) play the Indianapolis Colts (0-12) at 1 p.m. Sunday in Baltimore.

Pollard spent three seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs and two years with the Houston Texans and felt like he fit in with both teams, but if ever his attitude fit with a defensive personality, it’s with the Ravens. Baltimore’s success has been defined by its defense, led by linebacker Ray Lewis and a number of great players over the years.

“One of the things I’ve always known about this team is they’re going to play ball,” Pollard said. “I love that they put their defensive players in position to go play. They want bullies They want to go out and do what they can to be the dominant team on the field. …They have 11 dogs on defense and they don’t have any kind of leash.”

Pollard calls Reed “the greatest safety to play this game” and says their connection has been strong from the start. They discuss film, text regularly awayy from the field and joke with each other constantly. On the field, it’s all business.

“We connect in so many different ways,” Pollard said. “It’s so much fun, knowing the safety next to me is accountable to this defense. He brings his ‘A’ game every single Sunday.”

Reed went to the University of Miami, where he was a friend and teammate with Colts receiver Reggie Wayne. Pollard earned a bit of infamy cursing at the Colts receiver after Wayne caught a ball and stepped out of bounds last season. Trash talk goes on every game, but Pollard’s rant was caught on an open microphone and went over the air.

Pollard said he talked about that incident with Reed the other day.

“Tempers flare and everything else,” Pollard said. “At the end of the day, I respect that man (Wayne) for everything he’s done. He’s a great guy, a Hall of Fame receiver. I’m excited to play him again. I just get frustrated when he goes down before I can hit him.”

Pollard knows the Ravens will be heavily favored against this version of the Colts, but he says Baltimore cannot afford to enter the game with any sort of overconfidence.

“As much flack as they’re taking, they’re still a really good team,” Pollard said. “You look at that receiving corps. Reggie Wayne is one of the best receivers in the game, still. Pierre Garcon, that dude is playing the game. Austin Collie is one of the best slot receivers in the game.”

Of course, Pollard and the Ravens will be facing a different quarterback, with Peyton Manning still out after neck surgery and journeyman Dan Orlovsky behind center. Orlovsky and Pollard were teammates with the Texans.

“It is weird to watch film on them and not see 18 with the ball,” Pollard said. “Dan’s doing a great job. He put up 24 points on New England. …They are capable of beating us. We have to go play ball, I don’t care how many losses you have. Nobody comes in on Sunday and just rolls over.”

Pollard certainly plays with only one style, regardless of the opponent.

His approach dates back to his formative days in Fort Wayne.

“My father was a big-time football fan, a big-time football player,” Pollard said. “Me and my brother would sit there and watch and see the (Steve) Atwaters, the Ronnie Lotts, the Night Trains (Lane) come through and slap that dude.

“That’s how football’s supposed to be played,” Pollard said. “I thought, ‘This is how I have to hit.’ When I hit that way, the biggest thing is I’m going to have a bruise. Just go hit. That’s something I picked up, and I ran with it.”

The Indianapolis Colts have been a thorn in the side of the
Baltimore Ravens over the past 10 years, but the team has shown this season
that it has much less of a bite without Peyton Manning under center.

Involved in a tight race atop the AFC North, Baltimore will look to take
advantage of the Colts’ woes this Sunday and win a franchise-record ninth
straight game at M&T Bank Stadium.

The Ravens have won all six of their home outings in 2011 and have taken 16 of
their last 17 games as the hosting club. Their success at home this year has
helped them post a 9-3 record, good enough for a tie with Pittsburgh, Houston
and New England for the best in the AFC entering this week’s play. The Steelers
will own a half-game edge on the pack heading into Sunday’s games, however,
after defeating Cleveland on Thursday.

A win over the Colts would also place the Ravens back into a first-place tie
with the Steelers in the AFC North, but Baltimore owns the tie-breaker edge
thanks to a pair of triumphs over Pittsburgh this season. Both teams are coming
off Week 13 victories, with Baltimore running its current win streak to three
straight with a 24-10 victory at Cleveland last Sunday.

The Ravens used their ground game to keep the Browns in check, attempting a
franchise-record 55 rushes. Ray Rice got the bulk of the work and set a career
high with 204 yards rushing and also scored once.

“I have to give it all to my offensive line,” Rice said about his performance.
“I think it was my first 200-yard game. It felt good to get it against a
divisional opponent.”

Baltimore’s fifth victory in six games was also big from a mental standpoint,
as it had lost three road games this year against teams that were under .500 at
the time of the meeting. Two of those defeats followed wins over the Steelers,
but the Ravens were up to the task against a struggling team last weekend.

“We know we control our own destiny,” Rice said. “Regardless of who we play,
we’ve got to take care of business.”

Baltimore is aiming to reach 10-3 for just the second time in franchise
history, joining the 2006 squad, and snap an eight-game slide to Indianapolis
that includes the postseason. The Ravens haven’t beaten the Colts since Dec.
2, 2001.

The Colts would normally be a big test for the Ravens, but they haven’t given
any teams much trouble in 2011. Indianapolis has yet to win in 12 games and is
off to its worst start since beginning the 1986 season 0-13.

Indianapolis was a huge underdog last weekend versus New England and trailed by
28 points late in the third quarter before Dan Orlovsky helped engineer three
fourth-quarter touchdown drives in his first start at quarterback since Dec.
28, 2008 with Detroit.

Orlovsky threw a pair of touchdown passes, but the Colts still fell to 0-6 on
the road this season after the 31-24 loss. Orlovsky, taking over for a
struggling Curtis Painter under center, will get the start again this weekend.

“He played pretty well,” Indianapolis head coach Jim Caldwell said about
Orlovsky. “Obviously, that’s one thing that is quite evident and he certainly,
I think, did a nice job all around — in the running game and in the passing
game and just moving the ball. He was very poised out there. You’re going to
see him again.”

SERIES HISTORY

The Colts own a 7-2 advantage in their overall regular-season series with the
Ravens, the most recent being a 17-15 triumph at M&T Bank Stadium in 2009. The
Colts also topped the Ravens in Baltimore, the city the franchise had resided
in from 1953-83 before moving to Indianapolis, in both 2005 (24-7) and 2007
(44-20) in addition to a 31-3 rout at Lucas Oil Stadium in 2008.

Indianapolis has also defeated the Ravens twice in postseason play, including
a 15-6 decision at M&T Bank Stadium in a 2006 AFC Divisional Playoff en route
to a Super Bowl title. The Colts also bested Baltimore by a 20-3 count in a
2009 Divisional Round game held in Indiana, with Indianapolis reaching the
Super Bowl that year as well.

Ravens head coach John Harbaugh is winless in three lifetime matchups with the
Colts, which includes the 2009 playoff loss, while Caldwell is 2-0 against
Baltimore and in head-to-head encounters with Harbaugh as a head coach.

WHEN THE COLTS HAVE THE BALL

Orlovsky (475 passing yards, 2 TD, 1 INT) is the third quarterback given the
task of replacing Manning (4700 passing yards, 33 TD, 17 INT in 2010)
this year. When it was learned that a neck injury would keep the Colts’
franchise signal-caller on the sidelines, the club added Kerry Collins before
he was lost for the season early on. Painter (1541 passing yards, 6 TD, 9 INT)
then took over and was less than impressive, leading to Caldwell giving
Orlovsky a shot last week. With the journeyman under center, Indianapolis’
29th-ranked offense put up 437 total yards and Colts receivers combined for a
season-high 21 catches. Orlovsky himself set career highs with 30 completions
and 353 passing yards, finding wide receiver Pierre Garcon (55 receptions, 6
TD) twice for touchdowns while also getting intercepted once. Garcon logged
career bests with nine receptions and 150 yards, fellow wideout Austin Collie
(38 receptions) added seven grabs for 70 yards and Reggie Wayne (52 receptions,
2 TD) chipped in with five receptions for 55 yards. Perhaps Orlovsky is what
this talented group of receivers, which also includes tight end Jacob Tamme (16
receptions), going. Running backs Donald Brown (397 rushing yards, 4 TD) and
Joseph Addai (319 rushing yards, 1 TD) nearly split 27 carries against New
England and accounted for 80 of the Colts’ 99 rushing yards, while Brown
also scored a touchdown.

Orlovsky was sacked twice a week ago and figures to be under fire again this
Sunday against the league’s third-ranked defense. Baltimore is giving up just
287.3 yards per game and ranks second versus the run, while its 16.0 points
allowed per game also ranks third. The Ravens allowed the Browns to post only
233 yards of offense last weekend, and all but two of Cleveland’s possessions
came to an end with either a punt or a turnover. The bulk of the pressure on
Orlovsky should come from outside linebacker Terrell Suggs (53 tackles, 10
sacks, 2 INT), who had one of Baltimore’s three sacks a week ago as he reached
double-digits for the fourth time in his career. Suggs also ranks second in
the AFC in sacks, and the Ravens as a team are first in the NFL with 41 despite
linebacker Ray Lewis (68 tackles, 2 sacks, 1 INT) missing the past three games
with a toe injury. He may return this week, but if not expect linebackers
Jameel McClain (63 tackles, 1 sack, 1 INT) and Dannell Ellerbe (14 tackles) to
step up in the veteran’s absence. The two had seven tackles each versus the
Browns, while rookie defensive end Pernell McPhee (20 tackles, 6 sacks) logged
a pair of sacks. Rookie corner Jimmy Smith (6 tackles, 2 INT) also picked off a
pass and of course, the Colts must keep their eye on safety Ed Reed (40
tackles, 1 sack, 3 INT) as well.

WHEN THE RAVENS HAVE THE BALL

The Ravens have been using a balanced attack this season to rank sixth in the
league in points per game (24.7), but went run-heavy at Cleveland last weekend.
Rice (926 rushing yards, 56 receptions, 11 total TD), who also leads the team
in catches, rushed the ball 29 times and ripped off a 67-yard run while
averaging seven yards a carry. In an effort not to wear down their small back,
the Ravens also gave Ricky Williams (338 rushing yards, 2 TD) 16 carries, and
he responded with 76 yards and a touchdown as Baltimore finished the game with
290 yards on the ground, almost 200 over their season average of 114.8 per
week. With all that ground work, quarterback Joe Flacco (2895 passing yards, 13
TD, 8 INT) didn’t have much to do. He completed 10 of his 23 passes for 158
yards and was sacked once without an interception. Baltimore as a team has
given up only three sacks in the past four games, however. Even with limited
chances, wideout Anquan Boldin (50 receptions, 3 TD) made a pair of catches for
32 yards last week to reach 700 career receptions. Tight end Ed Dickson (46
receptions, 3 TD led the way against Cleveland with three receptions and 47
yards, while rookie wide receiver and deep threat Torrey Smith (32 receptions,
5 TD) made a 32-yard grab.

The Colts rank dead last in the NFL with an average of 29.8 points allowed per
game, and their meeting with the Patriots did little to help that fact. Indy is
also giving up 144.2 yards per game on the ground, 30th in the league. The
Colts did outgain the Pats a week ago, but New England still put up 362 yards
of offense, with quarterback Tom Brady throwing for 289 yards with a pair of
touchdowns. The Ravens aren’t likely to deploy the same strategy, but when
Flacco drops back he’ll be facing two of the game’s best ends in Dwight Freeney
(15 tackles, 5.5 sacks) and Robert Mathis (30 tackles, 5.5 sacks). Neither was
much of a factor versus the Pats, but the two have combined for 77 sacks in
their last 57 games. Freeney, meanwhile, remained a half-sack shy of 100 for
his career and would be the 26th player to reach that mark. With the two pass
rushers shut down, defensive tackle Fili Moala (15 tackles) logged his first
career sack. Safety Antoine Bethea (102 tackles) led the club with nine tackles
against New England, while outside linebacker Ernie Sims (31 tackles) added
eight and counterpart Philip Wheeler (75 tackles, 1 sack) made seven stops.
Indianapolis did lose leading tackler Pat Angerer (112 tackles, 1 sack) in the
game due to a knee injury that leaves the linebacker questionable for this
game, while a pair of cornerbacks in Terrence Johnson (37 tackles) and Jerraud
Powers (51 tackles, 2 INT) were lost for the season due to injuries. Cornerback
Jacob Lacey (42 tackles) did play for the first time since Oct. 16 and had six
tackles.

KEYS TO THE GAME

The Colts didn’t catch a break by having to travel to Baltimore, where the
Ravens have allowed the fewest points per game (13.4) and touchdowns (45) in
the league since 2008. The Ravens have also forced an NFL-high 72 turnovers in
that span and are second overall with an average of 272.2 yards allowed per
game at home.

One thing that helped the Colts catch up to the Patriots was their ability to
convert on third down. They went 10-for-15 in said scenario last weekend after
entering the game having converted only 32.4 percent of their third downs. A
repeat performance will help wear down a Ravens defense that got a lot of rest
versus the Browns.

Baltimore, in part because of the weather, really rode its ground game last
weekend, but given the Colts’ injury concerns in the secondary, it could be
Flacco in the spotlight for this one. Boldin will likely draw most of
Indianapolis’ attention, meaning Torrey Smith could have some room to make some
more big plays. Also expect the tight end duo of Dickson and Dennis Pitta to be
heavily involved as well as Rice out of the backfield.

OVERALL ANALYSIS

With a playoff berth almost nearly assured, the Ravens still need to finish
strong as they remain in the mix for the top spot in the conference. For the
Colts, that means they can’t bank on Baltimore looking past this game for next
Sunday’s road date against a desperate San Diego team. The Ravens have shown
an inability to get up for games like this season, but Harbaugh’s club
seemed to show last week it has learned its lesson and should be focused.
Expect plenty or Flacco and Rice in this rout.

–>

(Sports Network) – The Baltimore Ravens have had trouble this season following
up big victories when they face a team below .500. They have a chance to buck
that trend this Sunday with a matchup with the last-place Cleveland Browns.

The Ravens look to win a sixth straight divisional game and seventh in a row
over the Browns this weekend at Cleveland Browns Stadium.

With an 8-3 record, Baltimore is not only tied with Pittsburgh for first place
in the AFC North, but for the best record in the conference along with New
England and Houston. The Ravens could be in an even better position, but all
three of its losses this year have come against teams that were under .500 at
the time.

Baltimore followed up a big Week 1 win over Pittsburgh with a loss in
Tennessee, knocked off first-place Houston on Oct. 16 one week before an ugly
defeat in Jacksonville and then followed up a road win over the Steelers with a
setback in Seattle.

The Ravens hope those woes, which seem to creep up on the road, don’t follow
them to Cleveland after they knocked off San Francisco by a 16-6 score in the
“Harbaugh Bowl” on Thanksgiving. Baltimore used a club record-tying nine sacks
and a touchdown pass from Joe Flacco to tight end Dennis Pitta to give head
coach John Harbaugh a victory over the Niners and their sideline general,
little brother Jim Harbaugh.

“It’s just a big win for us,” said John Harbaugh afterward. “It’s an
opportunity going forward. It positions us really well. Now we have to conquer
a game in Cleveland, one that’s been plaguing us all year.”‘

Harbaugh was referring to the Ravens’ issues against losing teams following
big wins. Baltimore needs to shake the trend quickly, as its next four games
are all against teams under .500, a stretch that is book-marked with games
versus the Browns.

Baltimore’s head coach shook off the notion that his team just wasn’t ready for
those games, saying that the Ravens just didn’t play well. He also stressed the
challenge of this game given that the Browns are in the same division and are
coming off a solid showing.

“We’ve got to turn over every stone,” Harbaugh said. “We certainly acknowledge
that those three losses, coming off of big wins, against teams with sub-.500
records, were not good performances. They are team losses the way we look at it
— coaches, players, all of us.”

The Browns certainly seem capable of pulling off the upset considering their
performance last weekend in a 23-20 loss to Cincinnati. Cleveland, though,
failed to hold leads of 17-7 and 20-10 as the Bengals’ Mike Nugent hit a 26-
yard game-winning field with 38 ticks left.

That came after Cleveland’s Phil Dawson missed a 55-yard attempt at the other
end following a bad snap. He had already hit a season-long 54-yarder earlier
in the game, but long snapper Ryan Pontbriand’s toss back to the holder was
low.

Pontbriand fell on the sword Tuesday, getting released.

“We didn’t finish it off,” said Browns head coach Pat Shurmur. “The Bengals
did a good job of coming back on us. Just like if we had won the game it’d be
a team victory, we lost the game and it was a team loss.”

Cleveland has lost four of its last five games and does not have an easy road
to the end of its season. Four of its final five tests are against AFC North
co-leaders Baltimore and Pittsburgh, including a meeting at the Ravens on Dec.
24.

The Ravens, meanwhile, have won two in a row despite playing both games
without linebacker Ray Lewis, whom Harbaugh said has a chance of returning for
this game.

Baltimore, which has won seven of its last eight versus AFC North opponents,
can reach 9-3 for the second time in team history with a victory over
Cleveland, joining the 2006 club.

SERIES HISTORY

The Ravens own a commanding 17-7 lead in their all-time series with the
Browns, whose first edition of the franchise moved to Baltimore to become the
Ravens prior to the 1996 season before re-entering the NFL as an expansion
team in 1999, and have won each of the last six bouts between the rivals.
Baltimore recorded its third straight home-and-home sweep of the Browns by
following up a 24-17 home victory during Week 3 of the 2010 season with a 20-10
triumph in Cleveland last December, and also left Ohio with wins in both 2008
(37-27) and 2009 (16-0). The Browns last bested the Ravens via a 33-30 overtime
decision at M&T Bank Stadium on Nov. 18, 2007 and topped Baltimore at home by a
27-13 count that same year as well.

Harbaugh is 6-0 lifetime against the Browns as a head coach, while Shurmur
will be facing both the Ravens and Harbaugh in his current position. The two
sideline bosses previously worked together on the staff of the Philadelphia
Eagles from 1999-2007, with Shurmur then the team’s quarterback coach and
Harbaugh the special teams coordinator and later in charge of defensive backs.

WHEN THE RAVENS HAVE THE BALL

Thanks to a solid defensive effort, the Ravens were able to defeat the 49ers
despite just 253 total yards by the offense. Baltimore, which ranks 17th
overall in total offense but seventh in points per game with 24.7, did not turn
the ball over to lend its defense a hand, however. Flacco (2737 passing yards,
13 TD, 8 INT) only threw for 161 yards and was not sacked, while hitting Pitta
(27 receptions) for his first touchdown reception. The Browns will need to keep
an eye on No. 1 wide receiver Anquan Boldin (48 receptions, 3 TD), who led the
Ravens with four receptions and 63 yards last week. Boldin hauled in eight
passes for 142 yards and three touchdowns in a meeting with Cleveland last
year and needs only two more catches for 700 in his career. Emerging rookie
wideout Torrey Smith (31 receptions, 5 TD) added two catches versus San
Francisco. Running back Ray Rice (722 rushing yards, 54 receptions, 10 total
TD) was held to just 59 yards rushing on 21 carries by the 49ers as the Ravens
totaled just 92 yards on the ground overall. Rice can also make plays in the
passing game, and he caught three balls last week. The fourth-year pro rushed
for 154 yards in a Nov. 2, 2008 meeting with the Browns, while Flacco is 6-0
against Cleveland in his career with 1,238 passing yards, eight touchdown
throws and a 101.9 passer rating.

The Browns and their top-ranked pass defense will be without linebacker Scott
Fujita (51 tackles, 1 INT), who is now on injured reserve after breaking his
hand against the Bengals. He had started 10 of Cleveland’s first 11 games.
Cleveland’s pass rush generated a pair of sacks last weekend, including one
from rookie lineman Jabaal Sheard (35 tackles, 4.5 sacks). He also had four
tackles and a forced fumble, while backup linebacker Titus Brown also got to
the quarterback. Middle linebacker D’Qwell Jackson (100 tackles, 2.5 sacks, 1
INT) led the Browns with nine tackles, and both safety Mike Adams (35 tackles,
2 INT) and tackle Ahtyba Rubin (53 tackles, 3 sacks) had six. Standout corner
Joe Haden (44 tackles, 1 sack) figures to have the job of shutting down Boldin,
with teammate Sheldon Brown (32 tackles, 1 INT) matching up on the secondary
receivers. Rookie tackle Phil Taylor (42 tackles, 4 sacks) and safety T.J. Ward
(39 tackles, 1 sack), who hopes to return from a foot injury this week, are
also key for a Cleveland unit that is allowing 19.6 points per game, ninth-best
in the league.

WHEN THE BROWNS HAVE THE BALL

Cleveland has had trouble moving the ball this season, ranking 28th in total
offense (295.9 ypg), though its struggling ground game has racked up 282 yards
in the last two weeks. That includes 134 versus the Bengals, led by Peyton
Hillis’ 65 on 19 carries. Hillis (276 rushing yards, 2 TD) led the team in
carries after missing the previous five games with a hamstring issue.
Quarterback Colt McCoy (2332 passing yards, 13 TD, 8 INT) added 38 rushing
yards while throwing for 151 yards on 16-of-34 passing. He was sacked twice and
picked off once in the game, but did complete touchdown passes to wide
receivers Jordan Norwood (15 receptions) and rookie Greg Little (47
receptions). Both hauled in the first NFL touchdown passes of their career.
Little leads all rookies in receptions this season, adding five to that total
on Sunday, while Norwood led the Browns with 69 yards on four catches and
scored Cleveland’s initial first-quarter touchdown of the season. Tight end
Benjamin Watson (32 receptions, 2 TD) finished with two catches in the loss and
wideout Mohamed Massaquoi (20 receptions, 2 TD) failed to make a catch on three
targets. Playmaker Joshua Cribbs (29 receptions) leads the Browns with four
touchdowns.

The Ravens defense came up with a dominating effort on Thanksgiving, matching
the club record of nine sacks in a game first set in 1997 and matched in 2006.
Rush specialist Terrell Suggs (49 tackles, 9 sacks, 2 INT) led the way with
three sacks and forced a fumble, while Baltimore’s front three also got in the
act. Defensive end Cory Redding (27 tackles, 3.5 sacks) notched 2 1/2 sacks,
while tackle Haloti Ngata (46 tackles, 5 sacks) got to the quarterback twice.
Redding also finished with five tackles, while safety Bernard Pollard (53
tackles, 2 sacks), linebacker Jameel McClain (56 tackles, 1 sack, 1 INT) led
the Ravens with eight each. Baltimore, which has an NFL-high 38 sacks on the
year, would love to see Lewis (68 tackles, 2 sacks, 1 INT) return for this
game given his history with the Browns. His seven sacks against them are the
most he has against any one team, and he has also picked off four passes
versus Cleveland. Safety Ed Reed (39 tackles, 1 sack, 3 INT) has 10
interceptions in his career when facing Cleveland, returning three of them for
scores. Lardarius Webb (55 tackles, 1 sack, 4 INT) and Cary Williams (54
tackles) start at corner for the Ravens.

KEYS TO THE GAME

The Ravens need to finish strong to clinch the division and home-field
advantage, something the club has done historically well. Since 2008, they are
10-4 in December/January and are averaging 152.6 yards per game on the ground
over that span. They are also allowing an NFL-low 82.2 rushing yards per game
since 2008, and both of those phases should trouble the Browns.

Also troubling for Cleveland is seeing Suggs on the field. While Lewis and
Reed have given the franchise fits, it is Suggs who has been the biggest
handful. His 12 sacks versus Cleveland are the most he has against any one
club and he has three multi-sack games against the franchise. Shurmur will
have to be very aware of where Suggs is on the field at all times.

If the Browns can keep it close, Dawson may give them the advantage. The
veteran kicker has a strong leg and can shorten the field for Cleveland’s
offense in terms of getting points, and he has already hit on seven field goals
from 50 yards or more this year. That is tied for third-most all-time in a
single season, and he has converted on 83.6 percent of his field goal kicks
since Cleveland Browns Stadium opened in 1999. Opponents are connecting at a
78.4 percent rate during that span.

OVERALL ANALYSIS

The Ravens and Browns are both certainly aware of Baltimore’s issues following
big wins this season, and that should help to get overmatched Cleveland up for
this game. Trends are trends for a reason, but the Ravens do have some factors
working in their favor in addition to just being the better team. Having not
played since Thanksgiving, they come in very rested and have a weapon in Rice
who can expose Cleveland’s run defense. A slow start would surely cause him
unrest on the Ravens’ sideline, but this is one matchup the team won’t give
away.

I am starting early to mentally prepare myself for the Sunday, December 4 game between the Cleveland Browns and the Baltimore Ravens. It will perhaps be the most difficult challenge of the season as the “Old Browns” take on the current expansion version of the Cleveland Browns franchise.

It is always difficult for me when the Ravens come to town. I can still remember that dreadful day back on November 6, 1995 when Art Modell announced he was moving the franchise to Baltimore to begin play in 1996. 16 years later, I am still agitated at least twice a year.

I am fearful for quarterback Colt McCoy(notes) this week. McCoy has been sacked 26 times this season largely due to a weak offensive line and will face off against a rabid Baltimore defense led by Ray Lewis(notes), Terrell Suggs(notes), and Ed Reed(notes). In their last game against the San Francisco 49ers, Alex Smith was sacked nine times. I am just hoping McCoy can come out alive, especially facing the Pittsburgh Steelers next week.

McCoy’s best target this week is rookie WR Greg Little(notes) who leads the team with 47 receptions and 495 yards. My concern here is that he may have inherited Braylon Edwards(notes) Syndrome having dropped a total of four passes last week against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Known for ego issues during his college years at North Carolina, Little has shown maturity in his time with the Cleveland Browns making no excuses for his performance.

“Obviously, I was definitely upset at my performance,” Little said. “I took the time to cool off. I play with a high passion and high emotion. I got dressed and figured everybody would come up to me at once. Nobody showed up. I kind of left a little earlier than I usually do.”

He will need to be able to catch the quick throw this week as the Ravens’ will be coming at McCoy hard this week.

With Peyton Hillis(notes) back in action and Chris Ogbonnaya(notes) having a great season since joining the Browns, the running game will play a key role in protecting McCoy. One, if not both will need to step up and be able to move the ball.

On the defensive side of the ball LB Titus Brown(notes) will need to step up against Raven’s RB Ray Rice(notes). Scott Fujita’s(notes) injury could not have come at a worse time.

CB Joe Haden(notes) should be able to handle Anquan Boldin(notes).

As optimistic as I try to be regarding my beloved Cleveland Browns, all I am asking for this week is competitive football. Mistakes happen every game, but with the Browns already grossly overmatched in this contest, flawless execution will be the only thing able to keep the game competitive. Perhaps they will even surprise the world and pull off a win. That may be asking too much.

The Baltimore Ravens are well aware of their letdowns suffered against weaker foes on the road following quality victories. A dominating season-opening win over Pittsburgh was followed by a loss at Tennessee in Week 2.

The Baltimore Ravens are well aware of their letdowns suffered against
weaker foes on the road following quality victories.

A dominating season-opening win over Pittsburgh was followed by a loss at
Tennessee in Week 2.

A victory over Houston in Week 6 preceded a defeat at lowly Jacksonville the
following Monday night, and completing a season sweep of the Steelers on Nov. 6
quickly was forgotten with a loss in Seattle the next week.

Enter the 4-7 Cleveland Browns, who await the visiting Ravens (8-3) on
Sunday after Baltimore’s 16-6 win over NFC West-leading San Francisco on
Thanksgiving.

“We certainly acknowledge that those three losses coming off big wins were
not good performances. They’re there. They’re on the record,” coach John
Harbaugh said. “Now we face a similar challenge this week, but a tougher
challenge, because now we’ve got to go play a team in our division.”

That may not be cause for worry, however, as Browns quarterback Colt McCoy(notes)
is 0-6 with a 66.6 passer rating lifetime against the AFC North, and division
co-leading Baltimore (8-3) has won six consecutive meetings.

McCoy, who has passed for more than 300 yards only once this season, threw
two interceptions to Ed Reed(notes) and three overall in the most recent meeting – a
20-10 Baltimore victory Dec. 26.

“Two things – their front seven is really good. They just are,” McCoy said.
“They rotate in and out. They’re fresh. They’re playing really well. … And,
you have to know where Ed Reed is. He’s a playmaker. He’s a ball hawk. He can be
here one time and there the next.”

Despite McCoy’s struggles, the Ravens are anticipating a tough challenge.

“It doesn’t matter how many wins and losses they have,” linebacker Jarret
Johnson(notes) said. “They always play good against us. It’s going to be a dogfight, so
we better bring it.”

Johnson is part of a Baltimore defense that held San Francisco to only 170
yards while tying a franchise record with nine sacks. It ranks third in the
league allowing an average of 292.3 yards, and the Ravens have held the Browns
to 280 yards or less in five of the last six matchups, with the lone exception
being Cleveland’s 304-yard performance Sept. 26, 2010.

Peyton Hillis(notes) accounted for 180 of that amount in that contest, including
144 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries. Hillis, though, has exceeded that
rushing total once since and has averaged only 47.9 yards on the ground over his
last eight games dating to last season.

Hillis has missed six games this year while battling illness and a nagging
hamstring injury, and while he is aware of his struggles, he maintains a
positive attitude.

“It’s probably been my worst season so far from a mental standpoint and
physical one,” Hillis said. “All I can do from here on out is just go forward
and hope the best happens.”

In his first game since Oct. 16, Hillis rushed 19 times for 65 yards in last
week’s 23-20 loss to Cincinnati – the Browns’ fourth defeat in five games.

The Ravens, No. 3 versus the run allowing 91.5 yards per game, believe
Hillis will present a challenge no matter his struggles.

“He’s a really aggressive runner,” Terrell Suggs(notes) said. “Everybody knows he’s
Peyton Hillis, and he likes to have good games against good defenses. I expect
for the juggernaut to be in there and try to run down some walls.”

Baltimore’s defense may be without Ray Lewis(notes) for a third straight game as he
nurses an injured right toe. The veteran linebacker was held out of practice
Wednesday, but he is still hoping to suit up against the Browns.

“I’m doing everything I can to get back and help this team get where we want
to go,” Lewis said.

Joe Flacco(notes) has provided enough leadership on the offensive side to help
Baltimore to the top of the division. The often-criticized quarterback threw for
161 yards and a touchdown against San Francisco while completing 15 of 23 passes
for a season-high 65.2 percent.

Flacco has never lost to Cleveland, throwing eight touchdowns and three
interceptions in six victories.

He’s gotten some help from Ray Rice(notes), who is averaging 5.0 yards per carry in
his career versus the Browns.

The Ravens will face a Cleveland defense that ranks sixth in the NFL, though
it will be without veteran linebacker Scott Fujita(notes) for the rest of the season.

Fujita will have surgery on his broken right hand suffered last week.

“It’s a big loss for us,” linebacker D’Qwell Jackson(notes) said. “It’s a great
confidence having him out there. But other guys have to step up.”

That’s all for today guys, i’ll be back to blog you tomorrow.

BEREA, Ohio -- If anyone knows the value of a deep-threat wide receiver, it is Baltimore Ravens General Manager Ozzie Newsome. He's been searching for one for years.

BEREA, Ohio — If anyone knows the value of a deep-threat wide receiver, it is Baltimore Ravens General Manager Ozzie Newsome. He’s been searching for one for years.

“Once you have the quarterback, eventually you have to get that [receiver] piece,” Newsome said Tuesday in a phone interview. “You have to have somebody to throw to.”

Since drafting strong-armed quarterback Joe Flacco in the first round in 2008, Newsome has tried, mostly in vain, to acquire a fast, reliable receiver to complete his offense. Famously known for their dominating defense, the Ravens had all the other offensive pieces in place, notably all-purpose running back Ray Rice and a strong line. But even though the Ravens reached the postseason in each of Flacco’s first three seasons, the team exited each time because of a lack of firepower.

In 2010, Newsome traded for Anquan Boldin and signed Donte Stallworth and T.J. Houshmandzadeh. This year, he thought he had the problem solved through a trade for Lee Evans, but Evans missed seven games with an ankle injury. In stepped second-round rookie Torrey Smith, who has Newsome believing his search is over.

“Having his presence on the field is huge, because now people know we can take the top off the defense,” Newsome said.

Smith was taken with the 58th overall pick — exactly one spot before the Browns chose Greg Little in the second round. Smith’s impact on the Ravens has been similar to that on the Cincinnati Bengals by A.J. Green, who was the draft’s fourth overall selection.

Smith has had a three-touchdown game against St. Louis, set up a game-winning field goal with a long catch against Arizona, and hauled in the game-winning touchdown against Pittsburgh (after a few drops). He’s had two of the top five receiving games in Ravens history — 152 yards vs. St. Louis and 165 vs. Cincinnati — and is second in the NFL with a yards per catch average of 19.8. Smith has five touchdowns among his 31 catches.

“Our whole passing game has become complete because we have a vertical presence now, two young tight ends that can convert against linebackers and safeties, and Anquan who can make plays all over the field, as well as having one of the best [receiving] backs out of the backfield,” Newsome said.

Newsome talked of the importance of having that dangerous speed receiver after reviewing the coaches tape of Green snatching victory for the Bengals out of the air against the Browns on Sunday.

“What it does, it’s like having a great tailback,” Newsome said. “When you go into a game and you have a player like that, the first thing as an offensive staff you say, ‘OK, what are they going to do to take him away?’ Then when you find that out, that helps you to be able to dictate how you’re going to play the game. Whatever they’re going to do, it allows you to say, ‘OK, this is how we need to play the game.’ Because they’ll have some type of plan of taking him away.

“You have to be able to get the cheap touchdown,” Newsome went on. “At the end of the day, we’re still going to run the football. People know when we show up, you’re gonna have to stop the run. Then people put that eighth and ninth guy in the box. How do you defeat the eighth and ninth guy in the box? You have to go on top of them.

“It’s hand in hand. If you can’t run, they’re just gonna play cover 2 and that takes the vertical game right out it. But if they play cover 2 and try to defend the run with six or seven in the box, you’re out there to run it. So you have to field a team, not just one aspect of it. This league is so good, they can take one thing away.”

The trouble is finding that special receiver to strike fear in defenses.

“I think you have to look at three ways of trying to make that happen,” Newsome said. “You can go through the draft, do it through free agency if one of them makes it, or do it through trade.

“In order to get one of those guys, you probably have to be picking in the top five of the draft. I don’t want that as an option. So then, the next viable option is, you try to get one and you try to develop one. Right now, if Torrey continues the way he’s going, then people will have to do something to take him away, because he’s a home run threat.”

As Newsome’s fortune would have it, Evans is healthy now as the Ravens embark on the final rounds of a knockdown, drag-out fight for the AFC North.

“Lee Evans proved to us that he can do it, then he got hurt. So now we have basically two guys that can take the top off the defense,” Newsome said.

On Twitter: @TonyGrossi

Tony Grossi’s Scouting Report

Browns vs. Baltimore Ravens

Sunday, 4:05 p.m., in Cleveland Browns Stadium

Record: 8-3.

Last game: Beat 49ers, 16-9, Nov. 24, in Baltimore.

Coach: John Harbaugh, 44-22, fourth year.

Series record: Ravens lead, 17-7.

Last meeting: Ravens won, 20-10, Dec. 26, in Cleveland.

League rankings: Offense is 17th overall (26th rushing, 13th passing), defense is third (third rushing, fifth passing) and turnover differential is plus-4.

Offensive overview: Coordinator Cam Cameron has taken grief for throwing too much and ignoring all-purpose running back Ray Rice. Conversations with the coach and management, plus the onset of inclement weather, have taken care of that oversight. Early on, Cameron was preoccupied with developing quarterback Joe Flacco’s deep passing game. While it may have cost the team a win or two, the benefit has been the development of rookie Torrey Smith, who is a bona fide deep threat but still suffers an occasional drop. Smith got playing time while veteran trade acquisition Lee Evans missed seven games with an ankle injury. With Evans back, Flacco has two vertical targets, a fairly dependable intermediate target in Anquan Boldin, tight ends Ed Dickson and Dennis Pitta, and Rice to throw to. Quite a cockpit for Flacco to operate from.

Defensive overview: Former Browns DB coach Chuck Pagano took over as coordinator with the marching orders to restore a pass rush in the defensive attack. Boy, has he. After a nine-sack tour de force against the 49ers on Thanksgiving night, the club leads the NFL with 38 sacks and 16 forced fumbles, and is second with 10 recoveries. Their formula is simple: stop the run on early downs (yielding league-low 3.4 yards per rush), force the opponent into third-and-longs and then pressure the quarterback into turnovers or, at worst, sacks. Experienced playmakers such as tackle Haloti Ngata, linebacker Terrell Suggs and safety Ed Reed make this unit a coordinator’s dream. It registered the nine sacks last game without linebacker Ray Lewis (turf toe). The new name on the unit is cornerback Jimmy Smith, a first-round draft pick, who has one interception and is developing his rookie year as the third corner.

Special teams overview: Kicker Billy Cundiff is 25 of 31 on field goals with a long of 51 yards, his only conversion in six attempts over 50. He is second in the NFL with 38 touchbacks. When Cundiff doesn’t knock them out of the end zone, the Ravens’ kick coverage ranks 31st and has given up a 107-yard touchdown return. Punter Sam Koch is 10th in gross average (46.8 yards) and 11th in net (39.8).

Players to watch:

• Linebacker Terrell Suggs: One of the most prolific sack artists of his time, he has 12 career sacks and seven forced fumbles against the Browns. His nine sacks rank second in the AFC and seventh in the league overall.

• Safety Ed Reed: Talk about Browns-killer. He has more interceptions (10), interceptions for touchdowns (three) and passes defensed (18) against the Browns than any other opponent.

• Receiver Torrey Smith: This second-round rookie already owns two of the franchise’s top five receiving days. His 19.8-yard average — 30 catches for 613 yards and five TD — ranks second among NFL receivers.

Injury report: LB Ray Lewis (toe) has missed the last two games. DB Chris Carr (back), LB Dannell Ellerbe (groin), DT Arthur Jones (concussion), and RB Anthony Allen (thigh) all missed the last game.

Small world: Among the many players, coaches and executives who formerly worked or played for the Browns are: General Manager Ozzie Newsome, senior personnel assistant George Kokinis, defensive line coach Clarence Brooks, defensive coordinator Chuck Pagano, director of pro personnel Vince Newsome, vice president of football administration Pat Moriarty, assistant special teams coach Marwan Maalouf and special teams coordinator Jerry Rosburg. … Receiver Lee Evans attended Bedford High School. … Safety Haruki Nakamura is a Cleveland native who attended St. Edward High School. … Scout Jack Glowik is a Cleveland native who attended Benedictine High School. … Linebackers coach Dean Pees is a former head coach at Kent State.

– Tony Grossi

That’s all the news for today.

The Baltimore Ravens have long been known for consistently applying pressure regardless of who is the play caller, whether it be Greg Mattison or Rex Ryan, or the pressure player, such as Terrell Suggs, Ray Lewis or Ed Reed. This year is no different, as defensive coordinator Chuck Pagano has been exceedingly aggressive in calling the defense by dialing up an abundance of blitzes. One of the blitzes that he’s used and that has been around for years in Baltimore, as well as the rest of the NFL, is the Fire Zone blitz.

As Sports Illustrated writer and author Tim Layden eloquently wrote in his book, Blood, Sweat and Chalk, the Fire Zone was initially developed in the early 1970s by Miami Dolphins defensive mastermind Bill Arnsparger. Arnsparger explained, “we were able to rush five guys and cover with six. That’s what you need to run a zone blitz. We could usually drop a linebacker in that slot zone, and that gave people a lot of problems.”

The Fire Zone Blitz developed by Arnsparger would change the way defense would be played forever. At the time of the development, defenses were primarily using man blitzes, which quarterbacks were used to as they would simply dump off the ball to their hot read. However, Arnsparger’s zone blitz made that more difficult because the typically vacated area left by the blitzer would be replaced by another defender unexpectedly dropping into coverage, which was often a backside defensive end or outside linebacker (3-4). If quarterbacks attempted to throw it to their “hot” receiver, it would often result in an incomplete pass or an interception.

An example of a Fire Zone Blitz with 3-3 coverage behind it.

Decades later, the defensive concept is still in vogue and led by Steelers defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau, who made it most popular by building his 1983 Bengals defense around it. The Ravens have also mastered this over the years, as evidenced against the 49ers last week.

In Baltimore, Pagano has done a marvelous job of mixing up his Fire Zone Blitzes, playing different coverages behind the five pressure players and keeping the offensive players guessing as to which player is coming after them. The Fire Zone Blitz , sometimes simply called “zone blitz,” typically has three underneath and three deep defenders splitting the field into thirds in coverage while other times having four underneath with two deep defenders splitting the field into halves.

Against the 49ers, Pagano and his defense got to San Francisco quarterback Alex Smith nine (!) times, tying a franchise record for sacks in a single game. Many times, it was simply with three or four pass rushers whilst other times getting to Smith with blitzes, such as the aforementioned Fire Zone.

Before the ball was put into play by Smith, the 49ers showed a run-centered package with their 12 personnel, which means 1 running back and 2 tight ends. To counter this, the Ravens came out in their 30 Nickel package, which suggests that there are three down lineman and five defensive backs.

49ers show 12 personnel against Ravens 30 Nickel package.

In their Fire Zone Blitz look, the Ravens divided their responsibilities in several different ways. Below, I color coded the blitzers in white and the pass coverage defenders in red. The responsibilities are defined as the following:

Ravens prepare for takeoff.

DEFENSIVE LINE:

A (between C and G) — Attack the A gap in between the Center and Right Guard (62).

C (outside the OT) — There are two C gap attackers on this play, with both being the defensive ends. To your right, defensive end Terrell Suggs attacked the C gap by rushing outside and widening the Right Tackle. On the other side, defensive end Haloti Ngata attacked C gap to the outside of the left tackle.

BLITZERS:

B (between G and OT) — The nickel back and the middle linebacker will both attack the B gap from their respective alignments. The nickel back will loop from the C gap outside into the B gap to attract the attention of the tailback while the middle linebacker will attack the B gap on a delayed blitz, which allows him to obliterate the pocket by coming in untouched.

PASS DEFENDERS:

F — The two cornerbacks are flat defenders. They are to buzz the flat in soft (5-7 yards deep) coverage.

H — Hook defenders are the backside linebacker dropping in coverage on the left of the image as well as the linebacker (51).

Deep 1/2 — The two safeties deep are responsible for dividing their coverage into two halves of the field.

The 49ers attempted to counter the Ravens’ zone blitz by using zone protection. By doing this, the uncovered offensive linemen were required to help the playside teammate out in blocking the defender while the covered offensive linemen were asked to block the man that was in front of them. Unfortunately for the 49ers, they ran into some issues.

On the left side, Ngata, who lined up in a three technique over the left guard (77), ended up long-sticking across the guard’s face and into the C gap, which forced the left guard to help out before looking elsewhere to block. Meanwhile, the center (briefly) helped out the guard to his side before releasing to the second level as the “cleanup” guy, taking out any extra blitzers. However, he missed a blitzer, which was the Ravens linebacker (53) who made a beeline for quarterback Alex Smith.

Ravens demolish 49ers zone protection with the Fire Zone Blitz.

Once the blitzing inside linebacker got to Smith, it was all over, as the rest of the 49ers offensive line caved in and gave up the sack. This was one of many for the Ravens as they picked apart the 49ers offensive line with great precision.

Mission accomplished.

Last but not least, the Ravens’ pressure players, led by Suggs, have done a great job over the years of getting to the quarterback. They’ve used several types of Fire Zone Blitzes to get to signal callers, and as the creator of the website Blitzology.blogspot.com explained, the Ravens used a very similar designed zone blitz last season against the Carolina Panthers. The only difference was that it ran the opposite way and out of a Dime package (six defensive backs).

“Obviously I think that at the end we would have liked to have made it a little less exciting, if we could have,” Ravens Coach John Harbaugh said.

A 17-point, fourth-quarter lead all but disappeared for the Ravens as Dalton got the Bengals to the Baltimore 7-yard line in the game’s final minute, seeking a tying touchdown. But an intentional grounding call on Dalton pushed the Bengals backward and he was sacked on a fourth-down play from the 17-yard line.

“We just need to play better early so we don’t have to come back from behind at the end,” Dalton said.

Dalton threw for a touchdown and amassed 373 passing yards in his first game against the Ravens. But he also threw three interceptions and had a would-be touchdown pass in the fourth quarter overturned on an instant-replay review.

“We’ve got to play smarter,” Bengals Coach Marvin Lewis said. “We didn’t play smart enough today to win the football game. We had too many critical errors at critical times.”

The Ravens rebounded from a loss a week earlier at Seattle and improved their record to 7-3. They’re tied with Pittsburgh for first place but hold the tiebreaker advantage thanks to their two victories over the Steelers this season. They’re 3-0 against the Bengals, who dropped into third place with a record of 6-4, and Steelers. The Ravens and Bengals play in Cincinnati in the regular season finale.

“We have to go play and win,” Lewis said. “If we win, it [the playoff race] takes care of itself.”

The Ravens have stumbled this season against some of the less-imposing opponents on their schedule. But they have played their best in their biggest games, and that trend continued. Flacco threw touchdown passes to Smith and fellow wide receiver Anquan Boldin. Smith had six catches for 165 yards, and Rice ran for 104 yards and two touchdowns.

“We stumbled a little early but we kind of hit our stride by making big plays,” Flacco said. “Torrey came up huge and we were able to capitalize on a couple of those turnovers and make a couple of those big plays.”

Ray Lewis was on the Ravens’ inactive list because of a toe injury. He missed his first game since 2007, ending a string of 57 straight starts. That didn’t prevent Lewis, dressed in black sweat clothes and a black cap, from delivering his customary pregame motivational speech to his teammates on the field.

“We like him out there [on the field] better,” Harbaugh said.

The Bengals were without injured rookie wide receiver A.J. Green. Even so, they had the early lead after the first of running back Cedric Benson’s two rushing touchdowns. The Ravens managed only one first down and 27 yards of total offense in the first quarter, and some boos could be heard from the home crowd.

But the Ravens got second-quarter touchdowns on Flacco’s 35-yard pass to Boldin and a one-yard run by Rice. They might have had another touchdown late in the first half when Smith made a catch and sprinted toward the end zone but was tackled — legally, under NFL rules — by his long hair, which hangs out of the back of his helmet. Flacco threw an interception soon thereafter. The Bengals were thwarted on their final drive of the first half when Dalton lofted a pass into the end zone that was intercepted by Ravens safety Ed Reed.

The Ravens added to their lead with kicker Billy Cundiff’s third-quarter field goal. The Bengals had an immediate response with Benson’s three-yard touchdown run, but the Ravens restored their lead to 10 points in the final moments of the third quarter. Dalton threw a pass directly to Ravens rookie cornerback Jimmy Smith, who made the interception but had the ball knocked from his hand on his return as he neared the goal line. Referee Ron Winter was knocked down in the pileup of players trying to recover the fumble. Winter took a few seconds to get back to his feet after the play but continued to officiate. The Ravens’ Brendon Ayanbadejo recovered the fumble and Rice cashed in with a two-yard touchdown run.

Dalton’s third interception came on a pass on which Ravens cornerback Lardarius Webb made a diving catch. The Ravens scored on the next play on Flacco’s 38-yard pass to Torrey Smith. Dalton answered with a 49-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Andre Caldwell. But the Bengals got only a field goal with just more than 51/
2 minutes to play after an apparent touchdown pass from Dalton to tight end Jermaine Gresham was nullified on a replay review. The officials ruled that Gresham lost possession of the ball as he tumbled to the ground.

There is the quick update of the day.

BALTIMORE – The Cincinnati Bengals have surprised quite a few people with their impressive start this season. The Baltimore Ravens are not among those on the list.

Cincinnati went 4-12 last year and still beat the Ravens. Baltimore is 5-4 in its last nine regular-season games against Pittsburgh and 3-6 against the Bengals.

So don’t go telling the Ravens (6-3) that Sunday’s showdown for first place in the AFC North is an unexpected development.

“I knew they were always on the brink of being a good team,” Baltimore linebacker Terrell Suggs said. “Now they’re winning games.”

Suggs is the Ravens’ career sacks leader, but he didn’t have one last year against Cincinnati (6-3). On Sunday he will be chasing quarterback Andy Dalton, whose 14 touchdown passes over the first nine games is the most by a rookie since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger.

Four different Cincinnati receivers have at least 26 catches and two touchdowns, most notably A.J. Green (41 receptions, six TDs). Green’s return from a right knee injury sustained in last week’s 24-17 loss to the Steelers won’t be determined until game time, but coach Marvin Lewis still has plenty of options to send at the renowned Baltimore defence he ruled from 1996-2001.

“They’ve got some good weapons over there,” Suggs said. “This team is not only dangerous, but they’re special. Marvin Lewis knows that. They’re playing with a lot of confidence. We definitely have some work to do, especially after last week.”

Ah, last week. Coming off an uplifting win in Pittsburgh, the Ravens inexplicably lost at Seattle to tumble out of first place.

“We lost a game. Nobody feels good about it, but at the same time, we can’t really ride that wave and be on emotional highs and lows,” quarterback Joe Flacco said. “We have to get ready to play another game — a very important game.”

The winner climbs into a first-place tie with Pittsburgh, and the Ravens own the tiebreaker with the Steelers. The Bengals can ill afford to drop into third place with an 0-1 record against each of the top two teams.

“I think that’s really key, that (the Ravens) have kind of put their best foot forward already in the division by beating the Steelers twice,” Lewis said. “So for Pittsburgh and us and Cleveland … we’re all kind of playing uphill to the Ravens right now. This is a big football game that way. If you want to win your division, you’ve got to win the division games.”

Cincinnati is 4-1 on the road this season, but this will be its toughest test to date. The Ravens have won six in a row at home and 14 of 15.

“That’s our challenge, to win again on the road,” Lewis said. “We know that, like some places we’ve played this year, it can get loud. But we’ve got to do what we’ve got to do — be efficient on offence and be exact on defence. Then it just comes down to playing football.”

Cincinnati’s six wins are against teams with a combined 22-36 record, but the Bengals feel no need to defend themselves after their strong showing in defeat against Pittsburgh.

“It was tough that we ended up losing, but we were in the game the whole time,” said Dalton, who brought Cincinnati back from an early 14-0 deficit. “And so, we do have confidence we’re going to be in a lot of these games.”

After facing the mighty defence of the Steelers, Dalton now must rebound against a unit similarly stocked with veteran talent.

“It seems like when you talk about Baltimore and you talk about their defence, you talk about Ray Lewis you talk about Ed Reed,” he said. “It’s going to be fun to get a chance to play them.”

Although Dalton has been intercepted nine times, the Bengals have lost only one fumble and own a plus-3 turnover differential.

“I think that they’re winning in the same way they played last year,” Ravens coach John Harbaugh said. “They’re just doing it a little bit better in the sense that they’ve really protected the football. That’s probably the No. 1 key. They’re playing excellent defence and they’re moving the football. They are a well-rounded football team.”

It’s nothing Harbaugh hasn’t seen before from Cincinnati.

“They’ve beaten us plenty of times. We’ve always had a ton of respect for the Bengals,” he said. “It’s a big rivalry game for us. It’s one of the toughest games we play every single year. One of the most physical games we play, and that’s what we’re gearing up for.”

Baltimore has won its last 11 games following a loss — the longest current streak in the NFL — and is 14-4 in that situation during Harbaugh’s three-year tenure. Ravens fans lamented the defeat the Seattle for days, but the players quickly went into bounce-back mode.

“It hasn’t been difficult,” Suggs said. “We’re all professionals here.”

(Sports Network) – A blowout victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers back in Week
1 helped to propel the Baltimore Ravens to the top of the list of contenders in
the AFC.

Pittsburgh has slowly been making its climb back into the conference mix and
has hit its stride just in time for Sunday’s rematch with Baltimore, this time
on the home turf of Heinz Field.

The Steelers aim for a fifth straight victory on the season and seventh in a
row at home, including the playoffs. To do that, they’ll have to shake off the
memories of a turnover-filled 35-7 defeat in Baltimore back on Sept. 11.

The Ravens’ defense was in top form in that game. Baltimore forced a
franchise-record seven turnovers, intercepting Pittsburgh quarterback Ben
Roethlisberger three times and forcing a total of four fumbles. Roethlisberger
was also sacked four times, and the Steelers’ seven giveaways were their most
in a game since also turning the ball over seven times versus Minnesota on
Sept. 24, 1995.

With the Ravens having set a club record for their largest margin of victory in
games against the Steelers, many expect Pittsburgh to be better prepared for
Baltimore’s swarming defense in this rematch.

And despite the Steelers having the second-ranked defense in the league behind
only the Ravens, Pittsburgh head coach Mike Tomlin was quick to praise the
opposition on Tuesday.

“It’s probably a coincidence at this juncture. I am not ready to at least put
us in the conversation with the Ravens’ defense,” Tomlin said. “We are not even
close to doing what they are doing right now. Maybe statistically, but the way
they are generating splash plays sets them apart.”

Pittsburgh does have a huge win to build off of, as it defeated Tom Brady and
the New England Patriots at home for the first time since Oct. 31, 2004 with a
25-17 victory last Sunday.

The Steelers held the ball for almost twice as long as the Patriots, taking
some pressure off of their injury-plagued defense. Linebackers James Harrison
and James Farrior were out, as was defensive end Aaron Smith. Linebacker
LaMarr Woodley also suffered a hamstring issue towards the end of the game,
putting his status for this contest in doubt.

Harrison (eye) has been cleared for practice but is unlikely to play until
after the team’s Nov. 20 bye, while Farrior is battling a calf issue and is
questionable. Woodley’s hamstring was reported to be a serious injury that
could sideline him until the bye, but the linebacker said not to rule him out
for this game. Tomlin added that Woodley’s ability to practice will decide if
he plays.

Wide receiver Hines Ward also missed the New England win with an ankle issue,
but is expected to be available for this rematch.

The Steelers are trying to open a season 5-0 at home for the first time since
2007 and have won six of seven since their loss to the Ravens to take a half-
game lead over Baltimore and Cincinnati for first place in the division.

The Ravens won four of five to open the season before suffering an ugly 12-7
loss in Jacksonville on Oct. 24. They were then in danger of losing a second
straight time last Sunday to an Arizona team that came into the game with only
one win, but rallied from 21 points down to beat the Cardinals, 30-27.

Baltimore trailed 24-6 at the break, but outgained Arizona by a 249-56 margin
in the second half and scored 24 unanswered points. The Ravens then won it on
Billy Cundiff’s 25-yard field goal as time expired.

“We woke up, plain and simple,” said wide receiver Anquan Boldin. “Our offense
came out flat. We turned the ball over a couple times. We felt like we gave
them 14 points. We just woke up in the second half. We knew that we couldn’t
keep putting our defense in that situation. Still had a bitter taste in our
mouth from last week, so we wanted to come out and rectify that.”

Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco said earlier this week that the come-from-behind
victory may have given the club more confidence for this game than its Week 1
rout of Pittsburgh.

“We have to look back at it and see what we did well, and see what
we can carry over to this game plan,” Flacco said of the first win over the
Steelers. “I think last week, really, was more important for our confidence
heading into this week than that week was. We always feel like we can play
with these guys and go give them a good matchup and go beat them.”

Baltimore is trying to start a season 6-2 for a second straight season and the
third time in club history.

SERIES HISTORY

Baltimore’s win at M&T Bank Stadium in the 2011 opener cut Pittsburgh’s
overall lead in this regular-season series to 18-13, and the Ravens also
handed the Steelers a 17-14 defeat at Heinz Field during Week 4 of last year,
though Roethlisberger did not play in that contest while serving a suspension.
Pittsburgh has bested Baltimore in the Steel City in seven of the past nine
seasons, however, and the Ravens have not swept the home-and-home set between
the teams since 2006.

Pittsburgh moved to 3-0 against Baltimore in postseason play with last
season’s win in the Divisional Round. In addition to a 23-14 home verdict for
the Steelers in the 2008 AFC Championship, the Black and Gold also earned a
27-10 triumph in a 2001 AFC Divisional Playoff at Heinz Field.

Including the playoffs, Baltimore head coach John Harbaugh is 3-6 all-time
against the Steelers, while Tomlin owns a 7-4 record versus the Ravens and is
6-3 in head-to-head encounters with Harbaugh.

WHEN THE RAVENS HAVE THE BALL

Flacco and the offense shook off some early turnovers that gave the Cardinals
some easy points. Baltimore managed just a pair of Cundiff field goals in the
first half, but running back Ray Rice (489 rushing yards, 33 receptions, 7
total TD) went off for a career-high three touchdowns in the second half, all
from three yards or closer. Rice ended with 63 yards on 18 carries and also
caught seven balls for 36 yards. Boldin (34 receptions, 2 TD) also had a big
day against his former team, hauling in seven passes for a game-high 145 yards.
Tight ends Ed Dickson (28 receptions, 1 TD) and Dennis Pitta (16 receptions)
made six catches each, but wide receiver Torrey Smith (15 receptions, 3 TD)
caught only three of his nine targets for 57 yards. Though he did not throw a
touchdown pass and was intercepted once, Flacco (1751 passing yards, 8 TD, 6
INT) still posted 336 yards passing, completing 31 of the career-high 51 throws
he attempted. Flacco was also sacked three times, but could have left guard Ben
Grubbs back in the lineup for the first time since Week 1 as he recovers from a
toe injury. Wide receiver Lee Evans remains doubtful with an ankle problem,
however, while both center Matt Birk and receiver David Reed are questionable
because of injuries.

Pittsburgh hasn’t allowed more than 20 points in a game since its loss to
Baltimore, a matchup in which the Ravens racked up 385 yards of offense. The
Steelers, though, now rank second overall in total defense (270.8 ypg) and
stand first versus the pass (171.6 ypg). Unlike the Ravens, the Steelers
struggle in forcing turnovers, however, as they have just two interceptions and
four fumble recoveries on the season. Overall, Pittsburgh has a turnover ratio
of minus-10 and did not force one versus the Patriots. Still, the fact that the
Steelers limited New England to just 213 yards of offense without Harrison (23
tackles, 2 sacks) and Farrior (45 tackles, 2 sacks) is impressive. Woodley (36
tackles, 9 sacks, 1 INT) managed two sacks before suffering his injury, while
Harrison replacement Larry Foote (30 tackles, 1 sack) and safety Ryan Clark (50
tackles, 1 INT) led the team with eight tackles each. Defensive end Brett
Keisel (19 tackles, 3 sacks) added a sack, while cornerback Ike Taylor (20
tackles) ended with six stops. If Woodley and Farrior can’t play this weekend,
Lawrence Timmons (37 tackles) would be the lone regular starting linebacker in
the lineup.

WHEN THE STEELERS HAVE THE BALL

Roethlisberger (2302 passing yards, 14 TD, 7 INT) has done his best in putting
the season-opening game behind him. He has just four interceptions in seven
games since getting picked off three times by Baltimore and has thrown 11
touchdown passes over the Steelers’ four-game win streak, including two versus
the Patriots. Roethlisberger finished that contest with 365 yards on 36-of-50
passing and was also picked off once. Mike Wallace (43 receptions, 5 TD) ended
with seven catches for 70 yards, but the wideout’s long was only 16 yards as
the Patriots looked to take away his deep-play ability. That left plenty of
balls for wide receiver Antonio Brown (34 receptions, 1 TD) and tight end Heath
Miller (30 receptions, 2 TD), with Brown pulling in nine passes that included
his first career touchdown. Miller had seven receptions for a team-high 85
yards. With Ward (26 receptions, 2 TD) out, Emmanuel Sanders (18 receptions, 2
TD) added five catches for 70 yards against New England. Seeing as the passing
offense was clicking and ranks eighth overall in the NFL, starting running back
Rashad Mendenhall (421 rushing yards, 3 TD) got just 13 carries last week, but
did turn those opportunities into 70 yards for a 5.4 average per carry.

The respected Ravens defense may have yielded 27 points last week, but short
fields and a special-teams score inflated that total. The NFL’s top-ranked unit
(263.3 ypg) actually gave up a mere 207 yards of net offense, including just
98 through the air. On the season, Baltimore ranks third against both the run
and the pass. Linebacker Terrell Suggs (33 tackles, 6 sacks, 1 INT) was all
over the field against Arizona, recording a game-high 13 tackles and a sack. He
has 13 1/2 career sacks versus the Steelers in the regular season, the most any
active player has compiled against the franchise. Safety Ed Reed (27 tackles, 1
sack, 2 INT) had a pair of interceptions in the Week 1 meeting with Pittsburgh
and Suggs had three sacks in that game. Linebacker Ray Lewis (55 tackles, 2
sacks, 1 INT) also had a pick and seven tackles in the Week 1 rout, and added
five more stops versus the Cardinals. In all, the Ravens logged six sacks
against Arizona, getting a pair from pass-rush specialist Paul Kruger (6
tackles, 3 sacks) and one each from cornerback Chris Carr (7 tackles, 1 sack),
linebacker Jarret Johnson (26 tackles, 2.5 sacks) and safety Bernard Pollard
(21 tackles, 1 sack). Rookie cornerback Jimmy Smith, who suffered an injury at
the season’s onset and has been working his way back since, is expected to see
an expanded role in this game. Though he did not log a tackle versus the
Cardinals, he did have one pass defensed.

KEYS TO THE GAME

Keep an eye on Rice. The Steelers’ defense has allowed just three 100-yard
rushers in its last 58 games dating back to 2007, but Rice has two of them.
That includes 107 yards in the Week 1 victory and a 141-yard effort in
Pittsburgh on Dec. 27, 2009.

Flacco and Roethlisberger both have their work cut out for them this week, and
whichever quarterback finds a way to make plays will likely come out on the
winning side. The edge could go to Flacco given the Steelers’ issues at
linebacker.

Keep Heinz Field involved. The Steelers are always tough to play at home and
bring an impressive run into this meeting. The Ravens are just 5-10 all-time at
Pittsburgh during the regular season and 0-3 there during the playoffs.

OVERALL ANALYSIS

While a Week 9 matchup certainly won’t decide the AFC North, especially with
Cincinnati lurking in the shadows, the victor of this key clash will certainly
have an edge should the Steelers and Ravens meet for a third time this season
in the playoffs. That being said, Baltimore’s Week 1 victory likely won’t
factor into how this game will shake down. Enough time and games have passed to
make that meeting irrelevant at this point, and the change in venue certainly
seems to favor the Steelers. Pittsburgh’s injuries on defense could be the x-
factor, but the Ravens have been just too inconsistent this year to leave Heinz
Field with a win.
