With Tebow completing 6 of 22 passes for 60 yards and a game-sealing interception, Denver (8-8) claimed a first-round home game by virtue of a tiebreaker over Oakland and San Diego and will host Pittsburgh next weekend.

The Raiders’ loss also pushed the Bengals (9-7) into the playoffs as the sixth seed even though Cincinnati’s comeback fell short against Baltimore. Cincinnati will go on the road to play Houston (10-6), the No. 3 seed, in the first round.

With the Ravens (12-4) winning, the result of Pittsburgh’s game against Cleveland was all but meaningless. The Steelers (12-4) wound up beating their AFC North rival, 13-9, and are the No. 5 seed, but lost the tiebreaker to Baltimore, which swept the season series from the Steelers.

Baltimore didn’t have its game in hand until the final play, when Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton’s desperation pass fell incomplete as time expired.

Earlier in the afternoon, the New England Patriots secured the No. 1 seed in the AFC, and home-field advantage throughout the playoffs, with a 49-21 victory over Buffalo. Quarterback Tom Brady passed for 338 yards and three touchdowns to rally New England from a three-touchdown deficit as the Patriots scored 49 consecutive points. The Patriots (13-3) finished the regular season with eight wins in a row, and Brady’s 5,235 yards passing were the second most in NFL history for one season.

While much of the AFC picture unfolded late in the afternoon, all but one of the NFC playoff teams were settled by the early games. A night game between the New York Giants and the Dallas Cowboys would decide the NFC East champion and No. 4 seed.

The top-seeded Green Bay Packers (15-1), who clinched the No. 1 seed and a first-round bye last week, beat the Detroit Lions 45-41, despite five touchdowns and 520 yards passing by Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford,

The loss, coupled with Atlanta’s 45-24 win over Tampa Bay, made Detroit (10-6) the sixth seed. Detroit will play at New Orleans (13-3) in the first round. The Saints clobbered Carolina, 45-17, behind five touchdowns and 389 yards passing from quarterback Drew Brees, who finished the season with an NFL-record 5,476 yards passing. But the Saints drew the third seed when San Francisco (13-3) outlasted St. Louis, 34-27, to claim a first-round bye as the No. 2 seed and NFC West champion.

The fifth-seeded Falcons (10-6) will visit Dallas or New York in the first round.

(Sports Network) – The Baltimore Ravens have had trouble this season following up big victories when they face a team below .500. They have a chance to buck that trend this Sunday with a matchup with the last-place Cleveland Browns.

The Ravens look to win a sixth straight divisional game and seventh in a row over the Browns this weekend at Cleveland Browns Stadium.

With an 8-3 record, Baltimore is not only tied with Pittsburgh for first place in the AFC North, but for the best record in the conference along with New England and Houston. The Ravens could be in an even better position, but all three of its losses this year have come against teams that were under .500 at the time.

Baltimore followed up a big Week 1 win over Pittsburgh with a loss in Tennessee, knocked off first-place Houston on Oct. 16 one week before an ugly defeat in Jacksonville and then followed up a road win over the Steelers with a setback in Seattle.

The Ravens hope those woes, which seem to creep up on the road, don’t follow them to Cleveland after they knocked off San Francisco by a 16-6 score in the “Harbaugh Bowl” on Thanksgiving. Baltimore used a club record-tying nine sacks and a touchdown pass from Joe Flacco to tight end Dennis Pitta to give head coach John Harbaugh a victory over the Niners and their sideline general, little brother Jim Harbaugh.

“It’s just a big win for us,” said John Harbaugh afterward. “It’s an opportunity going forward. It positions us really well. Now we have to conquer a game in Cleveland, one that’s been plaguing us all year.”‘

Harbaugh was referring to the Ravens’ issues against losing teams following big wins. Baltimore needs to shake the trend quickly, as its next four games are all against teams under .500, a stretch that is book-marked with games versus the Browns.

Baltimore’s head coach shook off the notion that his team just wasn’t ready for those games, saying that the Ravens just didn’t play well. He also stressed the challenge of this game given that the Browns are in the same division and are coming off a solid showing.

“We’ve got to turn over every stone,” Harbaugh said. “We certainly acknowledge that those three losses, coming off of big wins, against teams with sub-.500 records, were not good performances. They are team losses the way we look at it — coaches, players, all of us.”

The Browns certainly seem capable of pulling off the upset considering their performance last weekend in a 23-20 loss to Cincinnati. Cleveland, though, failed to hold leads of 17-7 and 20-10 as the Bengals’ Mike Nugent hit a 26- yard game-winning field with 38 ticks left.

That came after Cleveland’s Phil Dawson missed a 55-yard attempt at the other end following a bad snap. He had already hit a season-long 54-yarder earlier in the game, but long snapper Ryan Pontbriand’s toss back to the holder was low.

Pontbriand fell on the sword Tuesday, getting released.

“We didn’t finish it off,” said Browns head coach Pat Shurmur. “The Bengals did a good job of coming back on us. Just like if we had won the game it’d be a team victory, we lost the game and it was a team loss.”

Cleveland has lost four of its last five games and does not have an easy road to the end of its season. Four of its final five tests are against AFC North co-leaders Baltimore and Pittsburgh, including a meeting at the Ravens on Dec. 24.

The Ravens, meanwhile, have won two in a row despite playing both games without linebacker Ray Lewis, whom Harbaugh said has a chance of returning for this game.

Baltimore, which has won seven of its last eight versus AFC North opponents, can reach 9-3 for the second time in team history with a victory over Cleveland, joining the 2006 club.

SERIES HISTORY

The Ravens own a commanding 17-7 lead in their all-time series with the Browns, whose first edition of the franchise moved to Baltimore to become the Ravens prior to the 1996 season before re-entering the NFL as an expansion team in 1999, and have won each of the last six bouts between the rivals. Baltimore recorded its third straight home-and-home sweep of the Browns by following up a 24-17 home victory during Week 3 of the 2010 season with a 20-10 triumph in Cleveland last December, and also left Ohio with wins in both 2008 (37-27) and 2009 (16-0). The Browns last bested the Ravens via a 33-30 overtime decision at M&T Bank Stadium on Nov. 18, 2007 and topped Baltimore at home by a 27-13 count that same year as well.

Harbaugh is 6-0 lifetime against the Browns as a head coach, while Shurmur will be facing both the Ravens and Harbaugh in his current position. The two sideline bosses previously worked together on the staff of the Philadelphia Eagles from 1999-2007, with Shurmur then the team’s quarterback coach and Harbaugh the special teams coordinator and later in charge of defensive backs.

(Sports Network) – The Baltimore Ravens have had trouble this season following
up big victories when they face a team below .500. They have a chance to buck
that trend this Sunday with a matchup with the last-place Cleveland Browns.

The Ravens look to win a sixth straight divisional game and seventh in a row
over the Browns this weekend at Cleveland Browns Stadium.

With an 8-3 record, Baltimore is not only tied with Pittsburgh for first place
in the AFC North, but for the best record in the conference along with New
England and Houston. The Ravens could be in an even better position, but all
SERIES HISTORY

The Ravens own a commanding 17-7 lead in their all-time series with the
Browns, whose first edition of the franchise moved to Baltimore to become the
Ravens prior to the 1996 season before re-entering the NFL as an expansion
Baltimore recorded its third straight home-and-home sweep of the Browns by
triumph in Cleveland last December, and also left Ohio with wins in both 2008
(37-27) and 2009 (16-0). The Browns last bested the Ravens via a 33-30 overtime
decision at M&T Bank Stadium on Nov. 18, 2007 and topped Baltimore at home by a
27-13 count that same year as well.

Harbaugh is 6-0 lifetime against the Browns as a head coach, while Shurmur
will be facing both the Ravens and Harbaugh in his current position. The two
sideline bosses previously worked together on the staff of the Philadelphia
Eagles from 1999-2007, with Shurmur then the team’s quarterback coach and
Harbaugh the special teams coordinator and later in charge of defensive backs.

WHEN THE RAVENS HAVE THE BALL

Thanks to a solid defensive effort, the Ravens were able to defeat the 49ers
despite just 253 total yards by the offense. Baltimore, which ranks 17th
overall in total offense but seventh in points per game with 24.7, did not turn
the ball over to lend its defense a hand, however. Flacco (2737 passing yards,
13 TD, 8 INT) only threw for 161 yards and was not sacked, while hitting Pitta
(27 receptions) for his first touchdown reception. The Browns will need to keep
an eye on No. 1 wide receiver Anquan Boldin (48 receptions, 3 TD), who led the
Ravens with four receptions and 63 yards last week. Boldin hauled in eight
passes for 142 yards and three touchdowns in a meeting with Cleveland last
year and needs only two more catches for 700 in his career. Emerging rookie
wideout Torrey Smith (31 receptions, 5 TD) added two catches versus San
Francisco. Running back Ray Rice (722 rushing yards, 54 receptions, 10 total
TD) was held to just 59 yards rushing on 21 carries by the 49ers as the Ravens
totaled just 92 yards on the ground overall. Rice can also make plays in the
passing game, and he caught three balls last week. The fourth-year pro rushed
for 154 yards in a Nov. 2, 2008 meeting with the Browns, while Flacco is 6-0
against Cleveland in his career with 1,238 passing yards, eight touchdown
throws and a 101.9 passer rating.

The Browns and their top-ranked pass defense will be without linebacker Scott
Fujita (51 tackles, 1 INT), who is now on injured reserve after breaking his
hand against the Bengals. He had started 10 of Cleveland’s first 11 games.
Cleveland’s pass rush generated a pair of sacks last weekend, including one
from rookie lineman Jabaal Sheard (35 tackles, 4.5 sacks). He also had four
tackles and a forced fumble, while backup linebacker Titus Brown also got to
the quarterback. Middle linebacker D’Qwell Jackson (100 tackles, 2.5 sacks, 1
INT) led the Browns with nine tackles, and both safety Mike Adams (35 tackles,
2 INT) and tackle Ahtyba Rubin (53 tackles, 3 sacks) had six. Standout corner
Joe Haden (44 tackles, 1 sack) figures to have the job of shutting down Boldin,
with teammate Sheldon Brown (32 tackles, 1 INT) matching up on the secondary
receivers. Rookie tackle Phil Taylor (42 tackles, 4 sacks) and safety T.J. Ward
(39 tackles, 1 sack), who hopes to return from a foot injury this week, are
also key for a Cleveland unit that is allowing 19.6 points per game, ninth-best
in the league.

WHEN THE BROWNS HAVE THE BALL

Cleveland has had trouble moving the ball this season, ranking 28th in total
offense (295.9 ypg), though its struggling ground game has racked up 282 yards
in the last two weeks. That includes 134 versus the Bengals, led by Peyton
Hillis’ 65 on 19 carries. Hillis (276 rushing yards, 2 TD) led the team in
carries after missing the previous five games with a hamstring issue.
Quarterback Colt McCoy (2332 passing yards, 13 TD, 8 INT) added 38 rushing
yards while throwing for 151 yards on 16-of-34 passing. He was sacked twice and
picked off once in the game, but did complete touchdown passes to wide
receivers Jordan Norwood (15 receptions) and rookie Greg Little (47
receptions). Both hauled in the first NFL touchdown passes of their career.
Little leads all rookies in receptions this season, adding five to that total
on Sunday, while Norwood led the Browns with 69 yards on four catches and
scored Cleveland’s initial first-quarter touchdown of the season. Tight end
Benjamin Watson (32 receptions, 2 TD) finished with two catches in the loss and
wideout Mohamed Massaquoi (20 receptions, 2 TD) failed to make a catch on three
targets. Playmaker Joshua Cribbs (29 receptions) leads the Browns with four
touchdowns.

The Ravens defense came up with a dominating effort on Thanksgiving, matching
the club record of nine sacks in a game first set in 1997 and matched in 2006.
Rush specialist Terrell Suggs (49 tackles, 9 sacks, 2 INT) led the way with
three sacks and forced a fumble, while Baltimore’s front three also got in the
act. Defensive end Cory Redding (27 tackles, 3.5 sacks) notched 2 1/2 sacks,
while tackle Haloti Ngata (46 tackles, 5 sacks) got to the quarterback twice.
Redding also finished with five tackles, while safety Bernard Pollard (53
tackles, 2 sacks), linebacker Jameel McClain (56 tackles, 1 sack, 1 INT) led
the Ravens with eight each. Baltimore, which has an NFL-high 38 sacks on the
year, would love to see Lewis (68 tackles, 2 sacks, 1 INT) return for this
game given his history with the Browns. His seven sacks against them are the
most he has against any one team, and he has also picked off four passes
versus Cleveland. Safety Ed Reed (39 tackles, 1 sack, 3 INT) has 10
interceptions in his career when facing Cleveland, returning three of them for
scores. Lardarius Webb (55 tackles, 1 sack, 4 INT) and Cary Williams (54
tackles) start at corner for the Ravens.

KEYS TO THE GAME

The Ravens need to finish strong to clinch the division and home-field
advantage, something the club has done historically well. Since 2008, they are
10-4 in December/January and are averaging 152.6 yards per game on the ground
over that span. They are also allowing an NFL-low 82.2 rushing yards per game
since 2008, and both of those phases should trouble the Browns.

Also troubling for Cleveland is seeing Suggs on the field. While Lewis and
Reed have given the franchise fits, it is Suggs who has been the biggest
handful. His 12 sacks versus Cleveland are the most he has against any one
club and he has three multi-sack games against the franchise. Shurmur will
have to be very aware of where Suggs is on the field at all times.

If the Browns can keep it close, Dawson may give them the advantage. The
veteran kicker has a strong leg and can shorten the field for Cleveland’s
offense in terms of getting points, and he has already hit on seven field goals
from 50 yards or more this year. That is tied for third-most all-time in a
single season, and he has converted on 83.6 percent of his field goal kicks
since Cleveland Browns Stadium opened in 1999. Opponents are connecting at a
78.4 percent rate during that span.

OVERALL ANALYSIS

The Ravens and Browns are both certainly aware of Baltimore’s issues following
big wins this season, and that should help to get overmatched Cleveland up for
this game. Trends are trends for a reason, but the Ravens do have some factors
working in their favor in addition to just being the better team. Having not
played since Thanksgiving, they come in very rested and have a weapon in Rice
who can expose Cleveland’s run defense. A slow start would surely cause him
unrest on the Ravens’ sideline, but this is one matchup the team won’t give
away.

Baltimore’s three losses this season followed significant victories and occurred on the road against sub-.500 teams.

Baltimore’s three losses this season followed significant victories and occurred on the road against sub-.500 teams. The Ravens are determined to break the trend on Sunday at Cleveland (4-7).

“It doesn’t matter how many wins and losses they have,” linebacker Jarret Johnson said Monday. “They always play good against us. It’s going to be a dogfight, so we better bring it.”

Coach John Harbaugh believes the problem in Baltimore’s three defeats wasn’t so much mental as it was physical.

“What we didn’t do is, we didn’t play very well,” he said. “We certainly acknowledge that those three losses coming off big wins were not good performances. They’re there. They’re on the record. Now we face a similar challenge this week, but a tougher challenge, because now we’ve got to go play a team in our division.”

The AFC North is jammed at the top. The Ravens are tied with Pittsburgh for the lead and the Bengals are one game back.

“We expect it to be a tight race. We just want to uphold our end of the bargain,” Harbaugh said. “What you have to concern yourself with is winning. That’s the bottom line for us. We can’t be concerned what the others teams do. We have to be concerned with what we do.”

The Ravens couldn’t have asked for a better scenario entering the final five weeks of the season. Before facing Cleveland twice, winless Indianapolis and struggling San Diego, they received a lengthy break following a rugged 16-6 conquest of the 49ers.

“That was big to have,” defensive tackle Terrence Cody said. “We have a lot of guys banged up — nicks and bruises — and it was big to have (time off) at this point in the season.”

It’s been more than two weeks since middle linebacker Ray Lewis (sore right toe) has played a game, and no one on the team needed the break more than Baltimore’s 36-year-old defensive leader.

“The rest part is big,” Harbaugh said. “I’m hopeful. I think he’s got a real good chance” to play Sunday. “We’ll just have to see how it goes.”

Fortunately for the Ravens, they have flourished without Lewis. The defense had its ups and downs in a 31-24 win over the Bengals, but Baltimore had nine sacks and yielded only two field goals in turning back San Francisco.

“They were two huge wins in five days. You can’t say enough about it,” Johnson said. “It’s a tough thing to do. We played a really good game against the Niners, but we’re moving on. We need to get win No.9 and we’re going to try and get it this week.”

Much will be written and said in the next few days about Baltimore’s tendency to stumble against sub-par teams. As far as defensive tackle Cory Redding is concerned, the toughest team the Ravens will face down the stretch will be … the Ravens.

“It’s not the Indianapolis Colts, it’s not the Cincinnati Bengals or anybody else that’s left on our schedule. It’s us,” Redding said. “As long as we continue to beat the negatives, beat the things that can hinder us from getting a win and overcome the mistakes we make on Sunday, we’ll get those victories. But we’ve got to beat the things that can hurt us, and that’s us. As long as we make our plays and not make any careless mistakes, then we’ll be great.”

Revisiting the Baltimore Ravens' 31-24 win over the visiting Cincinnati Bengals: The Ravens are a better defense with Ray Lewis in the middle of it. But Baltimore can win without him

Revisiting the Baltimore Ravens’ 31-24 win over the visiting Cincinnati Bengals:

The Ravens are a better defense with Ray Lewis in the middle of it. But Baltimore can win without him.

That might sound strange after the Ravens gave up 483 yards to the Bengals in their first game without Lewis since 2007. Most of those yards, however, came from Andy Dalton playing catch with his receivers on the outside. Lewis would have had a minimal impact on those plays other than dropping back into coverage over the middle or blitzing.

Lewis’ influence is felt mostly in the running game. With Dannell Ellerbe filling in, the Ravens limited the Bengals to four yards per carry. The only time you thought that Baltimore missed Lewis was on Cedric Benson’s first touchdown run, which came right through the spot usually occupied by the 12-time Pro Bowl linebacker.

The Ravens can play strong defense with Ellerbe, who lacks experience but has NFL starter ability. Ellerbe was injured Sunday, which limited his play, but he should be ready for Thursday.

The Ravens’ next generation of leaders — Terrell Suggs and Haloti Ngata — can also fill the void until Lewis returns. Plus, Lewis isn’t ever far away. He was almost standing on the field giving instructions during Sunday’s game.

Baltimore has had success without Lewis in the past and are 4-1 in the past five games without him.

How long will he be out? Coach John Harbaugh won’t say.

When a reporter asked if Lewis would play Thursday, Harbaugh replied, “Is that something I really want to share right now, you think? Would there be any value in me doing that?”

STAT THAT STICKS: Ray Rice has rushed more than 100-yards in game 11 times in his career. The Ravens are 9-2 in those games, including Sunday’s win over the Bengals.

OVERHEARD: “We’re 7-3, and if we were to pick three teams we were to lose to, we probably would have picked those three teams. You don’t like to hear that, you don’t like to look at it that way, but the bottom line is you’ve got to put those losses in the past and move on. We’ve played good football this year, and we’ve got to continue to do that.” — Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco in assessing the season.

WHAT’S NEXT: The Ravens play the San Francisco 49ers on Thanksgiving night at Baltimore’s M&T Bank Stadium, where they have won seven straight games (second-longest current streak behind the Packers).

That’s all for today.

Joe Flacco threw for 270 yards and two touchdowns, rookie Torrey Smith had six catches for 165 yards, and the Ravens (7-3) held off a late charge by the Bengals (6-4) to climb into a tie with Pittsburgh for the division lead.

Baltimore, however, owns the tiebreaker over the Steelers because it has beaten Pittsburgh twice.

“We’re the master of our destiny,” linebacker Terrell Suggs said.

That’s certainly worth savoring, but the Ravens will play their second game in five days on Thursday at home against San Francisco (9-1) in the NFL’s first matchup of head coaches who are brothers.

Baltimore coach John Harbaugh was asked if he was thinking about facing Jim Harbaugh on Thanksgiving.

“It’s two really good football teams going at it,” Harbaugh said. “I think, for our parents, it’s good. But you look at what these players are going to have to do to in a four-day period to get past this game, and to me that’s the story.”

The Ravens would love to bask in the afterglow of their win over the Bengals, but there’s just no time.

“It’s going to be quick,” said running back Ray Rice, who ran for 104 yards and two touchdowns. “It’s so fast that you’re on to San Fran right now. I’m going to try to watch some film on San Fran tonight to get the jump start.”

Unfortunately for the Bengals, they will have to wait a full week before getting a chance to rebound from a disappointing defeat. Cincinnati trailed 31-14 early in the fourth quarter but drove to the Baltimore 7 in the final minute before being denied its bid to complete the comeback.

One week earlier, the Bengals rallied from a 14-0 deficit before losing to Pittsburgh.

“In my mind, we’re better than those teams,” tight end Jermaine Gresham said. “They’re great teams and everything, but I think big mistakes killed (us) in some areas. We just have to get better. We will get better.”

The need to play a full 60 minutes against elite competition was a constant refrain in a quiet Cincinnati dressing room, where players lamented their inability to compensate for untimely mistakes and voiced a sense that they could perform at a higher level.

“It comes down to the fourth quarter,” said rookie quarterback Andy Dalton, who threw for 373 yards but was intercepted three times. “That’s how every game’s been for us. We’ve got to start faster. We can’t wait around until the end of the game to pick it up, come out and get back in it. It’s definitely going to be a focus for us.”

Bengals defensive tackle Domata Peko added, “We played a good game today, but we didn’t finish. Usually, we finish. We need to finish.”

Cincinnati next faces Cleveland at home Sunday.

Down 31-24, Cincinnati had a second-and-goal at the Baltimore 7 when Suggs collared Dalton, who was called for intentional grounding. On fourth-and-goal, Dalton was sacked by Pernell McPhee.

The Bengals needed seven points because on the previous series, an apparent 9-yard touchdown pass from Dalton to Gresham was overturned by a replay that determined the receiver didn’t hold onto the ball at the end of a juggling catch. Cincinnati settled for a field goal with 5:32 remaining.

“When the receiver went to the ground, he had the ball in his right hand,” referee Ron Winter said. “The ball touched the ground and his hand came off the ball.”

Baltimore won despite playing without middle linebacker Ray Lewis, who was inactive with a toe injury. He had played in 57 straight games and hopes to return for the 49ers.

Smith, whose 165 yards were third-most by a receiver in Ravens history, might have had more if Adam Jones didn’t grab hold of Smith’s long dreadlocks at the end of a 28-yard completion in the second quarter.

Jones was initially flagged for a horse-collar tackle, but officials corrected themselves and did not mark off any yardage because it’s legal to tackle a runner by pulling his hair.

“I thought I was going to score,” Smith said. “Next thing I know, I’m getting pulled down by my dreads.”

Dalton went 24 for 45 with a touchdown. Cincinnati was without standout rookie wide receiver A.J. Green, who hurt his right knee a week earlier in a loss to Pittsburgh.

But the Bengals gave Baltimore all it could handle.

“We’ve won six games to this point and we’ll win some more,” coach Marvin Lewis said. “We’ve just got to circle the wagons, lick our wounds and go.”

NOTES: Former Ravens kicker Matt Stover was inducted into the team’s Ring of Honor during a halftime ceremony. … Ravens LB Jarret Johnson made his 74th consecutive start, breaking the franchise record previously held by Michael McCrary and Jamie Sharper. … Baltimore has won seven straight at home and 15 of 16.

Unfortunately for the Bengals, they will have to wait a full week before
getting a chance to rebound from a disappointing defeat. Cincinnati trailed
31-14 early in the fourth quarter but drove to the Baltimore 7 in the final
minute before being denied its bid to complete the comeback.

One week earlier, the Bengals rallied from a 14-0 deficit before losing to
Pittsburgh.

“In my mind, we’re better than those teams,” tight end Jermaine Gresham(notes)
said. “They’re great teams and everything, but I think big mistakes killed (us)
in some areas. We just have to get better. We will get better.”

The need to play a full 60 minutes against elite competition was a constant
refrain in a quiet Cincinnati dressing room, where players lamented their
inability to compensate for untimely mistakes and voiced a sense that they could
perform at a higher level.

“It comes down to the fourth quarter,” said rookie quarterback Andy
Dalton(notes), who threw for 373 yards but was intercepted three times. “That’s how
every game’s been for us. We’ve got to start faster. We can’t wait around until
the end of the game to pick it up, come out and get back in it. It’s definitely
going to be a focus for us.”

Bengals defensive tackle Domata Peko(notes) added, “We played a good game today,
but we didn’t finish. Usually, we finish. We need to finish.”

Cincinnati next faces Cleveland at home Sunday.

Down 31-24, Cincinnati had a second-and-goal at the Baltimore 7 when Suggs
collared Dalton, who was called for intentional grounding. On fourth-and-goal,
Dalton was sacked by Pernell McPhee(notes).

The Bengals needed seven points because on the previous series, an apparent
9-yard touchdown pass from Dalton to Gresham was overturned by a replay that
determined the receiver didn’t hold onto the ball at the end of a juggling
catch. Cincinnati settled for a field goal with 5:32 remaining.

“When the receiver went to the ground, he had the ball in his right hand,”
referee Ron Winter said. “The ball touched the ground and his hand came off the
ball.”

Baltimore won despite playing without middle linebacker Ray Lewis(notes), who was
inactive with a toe injury. He had played in 57 straight games and hopes to
return for the 49ers.

Smith, whose 165 yards were third-most by a receiver in Ravens history,
might have had more if Adam Jones(notes) didn’t grab hold of Smith’s long dreadlocks at
the end of a 28-yard completion in the second quarter.

Jones was initially flagged for a horse-collar tackle, but officials
corrected themselves and did not mark off any yardage because it’s legal to
tackle a runner by pulling his hair.

“I thought I was going to score,” Smith said. “Next thing I know, I’m
getting pulled down by my dreads.”

Dalton went 24 for 45 with a touchdown. Cincinnati was without standout
rookie wide receiver A.J. Green(notes), who hurt his right knee a week earlier in a
loss to Pittsburgh.

But the Bengals gave Baltimore all it could handle.

“We’ve won six games to this point and we’ll win some more,” coach Marvin
Lewis said. “We’ve just got to circle the wagons, lick our wounds and go.”

NOTES: Former Ravens kicker Matt Stover(notes) was inducted into the team’s Ring of
Honor during a halftime ceremony. … Ravens LB Jarret Johnson(notes) made his 74th
consecutive start, breaking the franchise record previously held by Michael
McCrary and Jamie Sharper. … Baltimore has won seven straight at home and 15
of 16.

BALTIMORE — An uncharacteristic performance by the Baltimore Ravens defense was offset by an uncommonly effective outing by Joe Flacco and the team’s oft-criticized offense.

Flacco threw for 270 yards and two touchdowns, rookie Torrey Smith had six catches for 165 yards, and Baltimore moved into first place in the AFC North with a nerve-racking 31-24 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday.

Playing without middle linebacker Ray Lewis for the first time in 58 games, the Ravens (7-3) nearly blew a 17-point lead in the final 14 minutes, yielded 483 yards and let rookie quarterback Andy Dalton throw for 373.

But Baltimore got 104 yards rushing and two touchdowns from Ray Rice, and the defense made big plays when it counted most. After Rice was stuffed on a third-and-1 with just over two minutes left, he remained confident.

“I just looked at the clock and I said, ‘Our defense will get it done,’” he recalled. “That’s the faith I have in our guys.”

Even without Lewis, who watched from the sideline after being placed on the inactive list with a toe injury. The Ravens’ spiritual leader and leading tackler saw his unit pick off three passes and turn in a game-saving goal-line stand in the final minute.

Down 31-24, Cincinnati reached the Baltimore 7 before Terrell Suggs collared Dalton, who was called for intentional grounding. On fourth-and-goal, Dalton was sacked by Pernell McPhee.

The Bengals (6-4) needed seven points because on the previous series, an apparent 9-yard touchdown pass from Dalton to Jermaine Gresham was overturned by a replay that determined the receiver didn’t hold onto the ball at the end of a juggling catch. The Bengals settled for a field goal with 5:32 remaining.

“When the receiver went to the ground, he had the ball in his right hand,” referee Ron Winter said. “The ball touched the ground and his hand came off the ball.”

Baltimore is locked in a first-place tie with Pittsburgh in the AFC North, but the Ravens own the tiebreaker by virtue of their two wins over the Steelers.

“No. 1 in the division, that’s huge,” Suggs said. “Now we’re the master of our destiny.”

Even though it wasn’t a banner day for the defense, the three interceptions set up two touchdowns.

“Whenever we can get turnovers, it definitely makes everybody’s job easier,” cornerback Cary Williams said. “It’s just being able to capitalize on opportunities, and we did that today.”

One week earlier, the Bengals came up short in rallying from a 14-0 deficit against Pittsburgh. It was more of the same against the Ravens.

“It comes down to the fourth quarter. That’s how every game’s been for us,” Dalton said. “We’ve got to start faster. We can’t wait around until the end of the game to pick it up, come out and get back in it. It’s definitely going to be a focus for us.”

Baltimore took a 24-14 lead on a 2-yard run by Rice late in the third quarter. The score came after Ravens rookie cornerback Jimmy Smith picked off a pass and returned it 16 yards before fumbling. The loose ball was recovered at the Cincinnati 2 by teammate Brendon Ayanbadejo in a pile that included Winter.

The Bengals’ following possession ended with an interception by Lardarius Webb. On the next play, Torrey Smith split the Bengals’ two-deep zone and caught a 38-yard touchdown pass in the back of the end zone to make it 31-14.

The Bengals responded with a five-play, 80-yard drive capped by a 49-yard touchdown pass from Dalton to Andre Caldwell, who slipped behind Jimmy Smith down the right sideline.

But the Ravens held on, rebounding after a 22-17 loss at Seattle last week. Baltimore has won 12 straight following a defeat.

“It’s good to bounce back,” Suggs said, “but let’s not take any more steps back.”

The Bengals punted six times in the first half, two short of their season high for an entire game. Cincinnati’s offense managed only 143 yards before halftime, 47 of those on one play.

On the Bengals’ second possession, wide receiver Jerome Simpson made a juggling catch for a 47-yard gain to set up a 7-yard touchdown run by Cedric Benson.

The Ravens didn’t get past midfield until early in the second quarter, following a 15-yard punt by Kevin Huber. Starting at its 45, Baltimore picked up a first down before Flacco tossed a short pass to Anquan Boldin, who ran the final 20 yards for a 35-yard touchdown.

      Notes

Former Ravens kicker Matt Stover was inducted into the team’s Ring of Honor during a halftime ceremony.

Ravens LB Jarret Johnson made his 74th consecutive start, breaking the franchise record previously held by Michael McCrary and Jamie Sharper.

All those stirring comebacks and down-to-the-wire finishes won’t mean a thing if the Cincinnati Bengals can’t find a way to play a complete game against a tough opponent.

They didn’t do it against the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday, absorbing a 31-24 defeat and squandering an opportunity to move into a first-place tie in the AFC North.

Instead, the Bengals were again left wondering what went wrong. One week after rallying from a 14-0 deficit before losing to the Pittsburgh Steelers, Cincinnati came up short in an effort to climb out of a 17-point hole against Baltimore.

And now, the Bengals (6-4) are in third place behind the Steelers (7-3) and Ravens (7-3).

“It comes down to the fourth quarter,” said rookie quarterback Andy Dalton, whose would-be game-tying drive stalled at the Baltimore 17.

Joe Flacco threw for 270 yards and two touchdowns, rookie Torrey Smith had six catches for 165 yards, and the Ravens won despite playing without injured middle linebacker Ray Lewis, who was inactive with a toe injury.

Baltimore yielded 483 yards and let Dalton throw for 373, but the defense picked off three passes made big plays when it counted most. After Ravens running back Ray Rice was stuffed on a third-and-1 with just over two minutes left, he remained confident.

The Ravens won in part because of Smith, whose 165 yards were third-most by a receiver in Ravens history. He might have had more if Adam Jones didn’t grab hold of Smith’s long dreadlocks at the end of a 28-yard completion in the second quarter.

Jones was initially flagged for a horse-collar tackle, but officials corrected themselves and did not mark off any yardage because it’s legal to tackle a runner by pulling his hair.

Even though it wasn’t a banner day for the Baltimore defense, its three interceptions set up two touchdowns.

“Whenever we can get turnovers, it definitely makes everybody’s job easier,” cornerback Cary Williams said. “It’s just being able to capitalize on opportunities, and we did that today.”

BALTIMORE (AP) — An uncharacteristic performance by the
Baltimore Ravens
defense was offset by an uncommonly effective outing by
Joe Flacco
and the team’s oft-criticized offense.

Flacco threw for 270 yards and two touchdowns, rookie
Torrey Smith
had six catches for 165 yards, and Baltimore moved into first place in the AFC North with a nerve-racking 31-24 victory over
the
Cincinnati Bengals
on Sunday.

      Playing without middle linebacker
Ray Lewis
for the first time in 58 games, the Ravens (7-3) nearly blew a 17-point lead in the final 14 minutes, yielded 483 yards and
let rookie quarterback
Andy Dalton
throw for 373.

But Baltimore got 104 yards rushing and two touchdowns from

The Bengals (6-4) needed seven points because on the previous series, an apparent 9-yard touchdown pass from Dalton to
was overturned by a replay that determined the receiver didn’t hold onto the ball at the end of a juggling catch. The Bengals
settled for a field goal with 5:32 remaining.

“When the receiver went to the ground, he had the ball in his right hand,” referee Ron Winter said. “The ball touched the

The Pittsburgh Steelers (7-3) got just what they needed to jump back into first place in the AFC North. They beat the Cincinnati Bengals (6-3) on their home field (again) and then watched the Baltimore Ravens (6-3) fall apart (again). Heading into a much-needed bye week, the Steelers are looking down at the rest of the AFC North, holding a half game lead on the two contenders. (The 3-6 Cleveland Browns are out of this race.)

Fending off hungry tigers

The Bengals came into the game as one of the good surprises of the first half of the season. With a tenacious defense and the “Rookie Connection” of QB Andy Dalton(notes) and WR A.J. Green(notes), the Bengals had done enough to win five straight. At 6-2, even their often-disappointed fans might have felt a glimmer of hope. But the Bengals had not played either the Steelers or the Ravens.

The Steelers showed no ill effects from the last second loss at home against the Ravens. The offense took the ball into the end zone on the their first two possessions, displaying their wide array of weapons. Although a tipped ball interception and a revival of the Rookie Connection got the Bengals back into the game, the Steelers did not fold or crumble. They just kept to business. In the third quarter, the Bengals tied the game at 17 when Dalton made a great, under-pressure TD throw to Jermaine Gresham(notes). But the Steelers drove 81 yards on their next possession, and Rashard Mendenhall(notes) scored his second TD of the day, a 9 yard romp that showed a tired defense. The Bengals had four chances to score in the fourth quarter, but punted twice and threw two interceptions. After the last interception, the Steelers earned two first downs and ran out the clock. No last second heroics allowed. The Bengals were not laughable, but they were not in the Steelers’ class either.

Ravens fall flat

The Baltimore Ravens are too psychologically weak to be champions. They crumbled again a week after winning an emotional game against their arch-rivals, the Steelers. In week two, they were whipped by the physical, but mediocre Tennessee Titans. This time, they lost to the lousy Seattle Seahawks. The Ravens signature defense looked average again, letting Marshawn Lynch(notes) run through them for 167 all-purpose yards. Instead of stepping up to control the AFC North, the Ravens let the Steelers back in. The Ravens will now have to fight to keep pace with the Steelers. They own the head-to-head tie-breaker against the Steelers, but they just used up their margin for error.

Now the schedule gets interesting! The AFC North race will be featured even as the Steelers take their Thanksgiving bye week. The Bengals travel to M&T Bank Stadium to face the humiliated Ravens on Sunday, November 20. The winner will keep pace with the Steelers (the Ravens would lead by virtue of their tie-breaker; the Bengals would be behind the Steelers). But the Ravens/Bengals loser will fall off the pace and face a tough uphill battle to make the playoffs. The Steelers don’t play until after Thanksgiving. For now, I will sit back, be thankful for first place, and enjoy the desperate struggle between the Ravens and Bengals. I hope they beat the stuffing out of each other.
