CLEVELAND (AP) — Baltimore Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis will not play against the Browns, sitting out his third straight game with turf toe.

Lewis did not practice this week. He will be replaced in the lineup by Dannell Ellerbe. Lewis started 57 straight games before missing the Nov. 20 game against Cincinnati. The Ravens are being cautious with Lewis, hoping they can hold onto first in the AFC North while he recovers.

Browns running back Montario Hardesty is active after missing four games with a calf injury. Hardesty was set to make his return last week at Cincinnati but aggravated his injury during warmups. With Hardesty back and Peyton Hillis healthy after missing five games with a hamstring injury, the Browns are as healthy on offense as they’ve been all season.

It has been more than two weeks since Baltimore Ravens middle linebacker Ray Lewis has played a game because of an injured right toe, but no one needed the break more than the team’s 36-year-old defensive leader.

“The rest part is big,” Ravens coach John Harbaugh said Monday. “I’m hopeful. I think he’s got a real good chance (to play Sunday). We’ll just have to see how it goes.”

But Harbaugh made a point not to make any assurances of Lewis returning to face the Cleveland Browns this weekend.

“Ray is probably the guy that’s the furthest away (from returning), if you’re looking at all the guys,” Harbaugh told the team’s official website. “But then again, you never know. Ray has a sprained toe, a turf toe kind of thing, so those are a little more unpredictable.”

The Ravens (8-3) surprisingly have flourished without Lewis. The defense experienced its ups and downs during a 31-24 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals, but Baltimore had nine sacks and yielded just two field goals in turning back the San Francisco 49ers 16-6 on Thanksgiving.

“They were two huge wins in five days. You can’t say enough about it,” Ravens linebacker Jarret Johnson said. “It’s a tough thing to do. We played a really good game against the Niners, but we’re moving on. We need to get win No. 9, and we’re going to try and get it this week.”

Not much else going on in the NFL world today.

Baltimore’s three losses this season followed significant victories and occurred on the road against sub-.500 teams.

Baltimore’s three losses this season followed significant victories and occurred on the road against sub-.500 teams. The Ravens are determined to break the trend on Sunday at Cleveland (4-7).

“It doesn’t matter how many wins and losses they have,” linebacker Jarret Johnson said Monday. “They always play good against us. It’s going to be a dogfight, so we better bring it.”

Coach John Harbaugh believes the problem in Baltimore’s three defeats wasn’t so much mental as it was physical.

“What we didn’t do is, we didn’t play very well,” he said. “We certainly acknowledge that those three losses coming off big wins were not good performances. They’re there. They’re on the record. Now we face a similar challenge this week, but a tougher challenge, because now we’ve got to go play a team in our division.”

The AFC North is jammed at the top. The Ravens are tied with Pittsburgh for the lead and the Bengals are one game back.

“We expect it to be a tight race. We just want to uphold our end of the bargain,” Harbaugh said. “What you have to concern yourself with is winning. That’s the bottom line for us. We can’t be concerned what the others teams do. We have to be concerned with what we do.”

The Ravens couldn’t have asked for a better scenario entering the final five weeks of the season. Before facing Cleveland twice, winless Indianapolis and struggling San Diego, they received a lengthy break following a rugged 16-6 conquest of the 49ers.

“That was big to have,” defensive tackle Terrence Cody said. “We have a lot of guys banged up — nicks and bruises — and it was big to have (time off) at this point in the season.”

It’s been more than two weeks since middle linebacker Ray Lewis (sore right toe) has played a game, and no one on the team needed the break more than Baltimore’s 36-year-old defensive leader.

“The rest part is big,” Harbaugh said. “I’m hopeful. I think he’s got a real good chance” to play Sunday. “We’ll just have to see how it goes.”

Fortunately for the Ravens, they have flourished without Lewis. The defense had its ups and downs in a 31-24 win over the Bengals, but Baltimore had nine sacks and yielded only two field goals in turning back San Francisco.

“They were two huge wins in five days. You can’t say enough about it,” Johnson said. “It’s a tough thing to do. We played a really good game against the Niners, but we’re moving on. We need to get win No.9 and we’re going to try and get it this week.”

Much will be written and said in the next few days about Baltimore’s tendency to stumble against sub-par teams. As far as defensive tackle Cory Redding is concerned, the toughest team the Ravens will face down the stretch will be … the Ravens.

“It’s not the Indianapolis Colts, it’s not the Cincinnati Bengals or anybody else that’s left on our schedule. It’s us,” Redding said. “As long as we continue to beat the negatives, beat the things that can hinder us from getting a win and overcome the mistakes we make on Sunday, we’ll get those victories. But we’ve got to beat the things that can hurt us, and that’s us. As long as we make our plays and not make any careless mistakes, then we’ll be great.”

The 49ers and Baltimore Ravens each have scored 256 points this season.

When it comes to similarities, however, their scoreboard-stingy defenses are what make Thanksgiving’s game in Baltimore so appetizing.

Well, that and something about Harbaugh brothers coaching the teams.

“You look at what’s going on over there (with the 49ers) and it kind of reminds us of our own defense,” Ravens running back Ray Rice said.

Who’s got a better defense? That’s like pulling a turkey’s wishbone on Thanksgiving.

Statistics side with the 49ers, who’ve parlayed their defensive dominance into an eight-game win streak and 9-1 record. They’re allowing the league’s fewest points (14.5 per game) and rushing yards (73.9).

Defense, however, has been the Ravens’ hallmark for over a decade, highlighted by the 2000 team’s record-setting efforts en route to Super Bowl XXXV. This season’s version ranks third in points allowed (17.6) and fifth in rushing yards (93.2).

The Ravens’ defense looked vulnerable Sunday, allowing 483 yards in a 31-24 win over the Cincinnati Bengals. Two months earlier, the 49ers yielded 228 yards in a 13-8 victory at Cincinnati.

Ravens 16th-year linebacker Ray Lewis missed Sunday’s game with a toe injury, ending his streak of 57 consecutive starts. His status is uncertain for Thursday. He issued a statement before Tuesday’s practice, stating he wants to play and is making progress.

Regardless of Lewis’

availability, 49ers offensive coordinator Greg Roman said the Ravens are a team with no shortage of defensive talent. “It’s an awesome, exciting challenge,” Roman added.

Rice echoed that statement. He knows the 49ers defense hasn’t allowed a rushing touchdown this season or a 100-yard rusher in 32 consecutive games, which calculates to two seasons’ worth of dominance.

“Every yard matters in this game. It’s going to be a slugfest,” Rice said. “They’re playing great team football. They’re not giving up the big run.”

Rice hailed the “amazing” work that linebackers Patrick Willis and NaVorro Bowman have done behind a lane-clearing defensive front.

Rice is coming off his third 100-yard rushing game this season. How big of a threat is he to reach that mark against the 49ers?

“He’s a complete back,” Willis said. “He can run between the tackles. He can catch the ball. He can do it all. So he poses a big threat.”

From 2006-09, the Ravens went 39 straight games with not allowing a 100-yard rusher. Consider it a franchise tradition. The Ravens went two straight seasons without yielding a 100-yard rusher in 1999 and 2000.

Baltimore’s 2000-season championship team also set a league record for fewest points in a 16-game schedule (165) and fewest rushing yards (970).

Speaking of records, the 49ers’ Frank Gore is on the cusp of becoming the franchise’s all-time leading rusher. He is 61 yards away from passing Joe Perry.

The modern-day Ravens may boast impressive stats like the 49ers, but there are differences between the squads, specifically in terms of how they use personnel.

Mike Mayock, who’ll be part of the NFL Network’s broadcast crew Thursday, said the Ravens have a more “exotic” look with how they shuffle their personnel, whereas the 49ers maintain a predictable cast in their base alignment of three down linemen and four linebackers.

Although 49ers defensive coordinator Vic Fangio downplayed the defenses’ similarities, he did note that they share similar lingo as both teams’ schemes trace to past ones used by the Steelers and Saints.

Fangio spent four seasons on the Ravens staff before joining Jim Harbaugh at Stanford last year. The Ravens offense might rank a pedestrian 15th in yards per game, but stats can be deceiving.

Said Fangio: “It’s probably the best offensive, skill-position personnel the Ravens have ever had since they moved to Baltimore (in 1996).”

The 49ers just so happen to have arguably their best defense since the mid-1990s to counter that.

“Everyone wants to be good,” linebacker Ahmad Brooks said, “and as long as we keep doing that, I don’t think we’ll have a 100-yard rusher against us this year.”

With Thanksgiving approaching, there are three huge games on the NFL schedule for Week 12. One of the biggest games involves the 9-1 San Francisco 49ers visiting the 7-3 Baltimore Ravens. While the Harbaugh brothers are likely to garner most of the attention, this game is huge because of the players involved. While the 49ers have essentially wrapped up their division title, the Ravens still have work to do. With that in mind, the status of Ray Lewis(notes) is going to be a huge question.

Lewis missed the November 20 game against the Cincinnati Bengals with a foot injury. It was the first time in 57 games that Lewis did not play. The foot injury is not serious enough to require surgery or an extended absence, but it could impact his availability for this game. Since the Ravens have a short week, his availability might be a game time decision. Lewis has said that he is making every effort to play in the game. The short week might play a role in that. At this point, the expectation is that Lewis will be good to go. But since he hasn’t been back on the field yet, anything can happen.

It was clear that the Ravens defense struggled without Lewis. The team forced some turnovers but also allowed the Bengals to gain nearly 500 yards in the game. That is almost unheard of for a Baltimore defense. The linebackers were not as strong without Lewis. The Bengals were able to get a lot of big pass plays in the game. Andy Dalton(notes) finished the day with 373 yards. The Ravens can’t afford to have that happen again.

Lewis is the leader of this team. His presence alone changes the face of the Baltimore defense. At 7-3, the Ravens control their own destiny in the AFC North. But they don’t have a lot of breathing room. The AFC race is crowded with 10 teams with records between 5-5 and 7-3. The 49ers will come into this game looking to prove they are one of the best teams in the league. Baltimore needs this win to keep pace with the rest of the AFC. If Lewis can play, the defense should be in better shape. But if he can’t, they will need to find a way to limit the damage better than they did against the Bengals.

Joe Flacco(notes) threw for 270 yards and two touchdowns, rookie Torrey Smith(notes) had
six catches for 165 yards, and the Ravens (7-3) held off a late charge by the
Bengals (6-4) to climb into a tie with Pittsburgh for the division lead.

Baltimore, however, owns the tiebreaker over the Steelers because it has
beaten Pittsburgh twice.

“We’re the master of our destiny,” linebacker Terrell Suggs(notes) said.

That’s certainly worth savoring, but the Ravens will play their second game
in five days on Thursday at home against San Francisco (9-1) in the NFL’s first
matchup of head coaches who are brothers.

Baltimore coach John Harbaugh was asked if he was thinking about facing Jim
Harbaugh on Thanksgiving.

“It’s two really good football teams going at it,” Harbaugh said. “I
think, for our parents, it’s good. But you look at what these players are going
to have to do to in a four-day period to get past this game, and to me that’s
the story.”

The Ravens would love to bask in the afterglow of their win over the
Bengals, but there’s just no time.

“It’s going to be quick,” said running back Ray Rice(notes), who ran for 104
yards and two touchdowns. “It’s so fast that you’re on to San Fran right now.
I’m going to try to watch some film on San Fran tonight to get the jump start.”

Unfortunately for the Bengals, they will have to wait a full week before
getting a chance to rebound from a disappointing defeat. Cincinnati trailed
31-14 early in the fourth quarter but drove to the Baltimore 7 in the final
minute before being denied its bid to complete the comeback.

One week earlier, the Bengals rallied from a 14-0 deficit before losing to
Pittsburgh.

“In my mind, we’re better than those teams,” tight end Jermaine Gresham(notes)
said. “They’re great teams and everything, but I think big mistakes killed (us)
in some areas. We just have to get better. We will get better.”

The need to play a full 60 minutes against elite competition was a constant
refrain in a quiet Cincinnati dressing room, where players lamented their
inability to compensate for untimely mistakes and voiced a sense that they could
perform at a higher level.

“It comes down to the fourth quarter,” said rookie quarterback Andy
Dalton(notes), who threw for 373 yards but was intercepted three times. “That’s how
every game’s been for us. We’ve got to start faster. We can’t wait around until
the end of the game to pick it up, come out and get back in it. It’s definitely
going to be a focus for us.”

Bengals defensive tackle Domata Peko(notes) added, “We played a good game today,
but we didn’t finish. Usually, we finish. We need to finish.”

Cincinnati next faces Cleveland at home Sunday.

Down 31-24, Cincinnati had a second-and-goal at the Baltimore 7 when Suggs
collared Dalton, who was called for intentional grounding. On fourth-and-goal,
Dalton was sacked by Pernell McPhee(notes).

The Bengals needed seven points because on the previous series, an apparent
9-yard touchdown pass from Dalton to Gresham was overturned by a replay that
determined the receiver didn’t hold onto the ball at the end of a juggling
catch. Cincinnati settled for a field goal with 5:32 remaining.

“When the receiver went to the ground, he had the ball in his right hand,”
referee Ron Winter said. “The ball touched the ground and his hand came off the
ball.”

Baltimore won despite playing without middle linebacker Ray Lewis(notes), who was
inactive with a toe injury. He had played in 57 straight games and hopes to
return for the 49ers.

Smith, whose 165 yards were third-most by a receiver in Ravens history,
might have had more if Adam Jones(notes) didn’t grab hold of Smith’s long dreadlocks at
the end of a 28-yard completion in the second quarter.

Jones was initially flagged for a horse-collar tackle, but officials
corrected themselves and did not mark off any yardage because it’s legal to
tackle a runner by pulling his hair.

“I thought I was going to score,” Smith said. “Next thing I know, I’m
getting pulled down by my dreads.”

Dalton went 24 for 45 with a touchdown. Cincinnati was without standout
rookie wide receiver A.J. Green(notes), who hurt his right knee a week earlier in a
loss to Pittsburgh.

But the Bengals gave Baltimore all it could handle.

“We’ve won six games to this point and we’ll win some more,” coach Marvin
Lewis said. “We’ve just got to circle the wagons, lick our wounds and go.”

NOTES: Former Ravens kicker Matt Stover(notes) was inducted into the team’s Ring of
Honor during a halftime ceremony. … Ravens LB Jarret Johnson(notes) made his 74th
consecutive start, breaking the franchise record previously held by Michael
McCrary and Jamie Sharper. … Baltimore has won seven straight at home and 15
of 16.

There is the quick update of the day.

BALTIMORE (AP) — An uncharacteristic performance by the Baltimore Ravens defense was offset by an uncommonly effective outing by Joe Flacco and the team’s oft-criticized offense.

Flacco threw for 270 yards and two touchdowns, rookie Torrey Smith had six catches for 165 yards, and Baltimore moved into first place in the AFC North with a nerve-racking 31-24 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday.

Playing without middle linebacker Ray Lewis for the first time in 58 games, the Ravens (7-3) nearly blew a 17-point lead in the final 14 minutes, yielded 483 yards and let rookie quarterback Andy Dalton throw for 373.

But Baltimore got 104 yards rushing and two touchdowns from Ray Rice , and the defense made big plays when it counted most. After Rice was stuffed on a third-and-1 with just over two minutes left, he remained confident.

“I just looked at the clock and I said, `Our defense will get it done,”‘ he recalled. “That’s the faith I have in our guys.”

Even without Lewis, who watched from the sideline after being placed on the inactive list with a toe injury. The Ravens’ spiritual leader and leading tackler saw his unit pick off three passes and turn in a game-saving goal-line stand in the final minute.

Down 31-24, Cincinnati reached the Baltimore 7 before Terrell Suggs collared Dalton, who was called for intentional grounding. On fourth-and-goal, Dalton was sacked by Pernell McPhee .

The Bengals (6-4) needed seven points because on the previous series, an apparent 9-yard touchdown pass from Dalton to Jermaine Gresham was overturned by a replay that determined the receiver didn’t hold onto the ball at the end of a juggling catch. The Bengals settled for a field goal with 5:32 remaining.

“When the receiver went to the ground, he had the ball in his right hand,” referee Ron Winter said. “The ball touched the ground and his hand came off the ball.”

Baltimore is locked in a first-place tie with Pittsburgh in the AFC North, but the Ravens own the tiebreaker by virtue of their two wins over the Steelers.

“No. 1 in the division, that’s huge,” Suggs said. “Now we’re the master of our destiny.”

The Ravens won in part because of Smith, whose 165 yards were third-most by a receiver in Ravens history. He might have had more if Adam Jones didn’t grab hold of Smith’s long dreadlocks at the end of a 28-yard completion in the second quarter.

Jones was initially flagged for a horse-collar tackle, but officials corrected themselves and did not mark off any yardage because it’s legal to tackle a runner by pulling his hair.

Even though it wasn’t a banner day for the Baltimore defense, its three interceptions set up two touchdowns.

“Whenever we can get turnovers, it definitely makes everybody’s job easier,” cornerback Cary Williams said. “It’s just being able to capitalize on opportunities, and we did that today.”

Dalton went 24 for 45 with a touchdown. Cincinnati was without standout rookie wide receiver A.J. Green, who hurt his right knee a week earlier in a loss to Pittsburgh.

But the Bengals gave Baltimore all it could handle.

“We’ve won six games to this point and we’ll win some more,” coach Marvin Lewis said. “We’ve just got to circle the wagons, lick our wounds and go.”

One week earlier, the Bengals came up short in rallying from a 14-0 deficit against Pittsburgh. It was more of the same against the Ravens.

“It comes down to the fourth quarter. That’s how every game’s been for us,” Dalton said. “We’ve got to start faster. We can’t wait around until the end of the game to pick it up, come out and get back in it. It’s definitely going to be a focus for us.”

Baltimore took a 24-14 lead on a 2-yard run by Rice late in the third quarter. The score came after Ravens rookie cornerback Jimmy Smith picked off a pass and returned it 16 yards before fumbling. The loose ball was recovered at the Cincinnati 2 by teammate Brendon Ayanbadejo in a pile that included Winter.

The Bengals’ following possession ended with an interception by Lardarius Webb . On the next play, Torrey Smith split the Bengals’ two-deep zone and caught a 38-yard touchdown pass in the back of the end zone to make it 31-14.

The Bengals responded with a five-play, 80-yard drive capped by a 49-yard touchdown pass from Dalton to Andre Caldwell , who slipped behind Jimmy Smith down the right sideline.

But the Ravens held on, rebounding after a 22-17 loss at Seattle last week. Baltimore has won 12 straight following a defeat.

“It’s good to bounce back,” Suggs said, “but let’s not take any more steps back.”

The Bengals punted six times in the first half, two short of their season high for an entire game. Cincinnati’s offense managed only 143 yards before halftime, 47 of those on one play.

On the Bengals’ second possession, wide receiver Jerome Simpson made a juggling catch for a 47-yard gain to set up a 7-yard touchdown run by Cedric Benson .

The Ravens didn’t get past midfield until early in the second quarter, following a 15-yard punt by Kevin Huber . Starting at its 45, Baltimore picked up a first down before Flacco tossed a short pass to Anquan Boldin , who ran the final 20 yards for a 35-yard touchdown.

Even though it wasn’t a banner day for the defense, the three interceptions set up two touchdowns.

The Bengals’ following possession ended with an interception by Lardarius Webb. On the next play, Torrey Smith split the Bengals’ two-deep zone and caught a 38-yard touchdown pass in the back of the end zone to make it 31-14.

The Bengals responded with a five-play, 80-yard drive capped by a 49-yard touchdown pass from Dalton to Andre Caldwell, who slipped behind Jimmy Smith down the right sideline.

On the Bengals’ second possession, wide receiver Jerome Simpson made a juggling catch for a 47-yard gain to set up a 7-yard touchdown run by Cedric Benson.

The Ravens didn’t get past midfield until early in the second quarter, following a 15-yard punt by Kevin Huber. Starting at its 45, Baltimore picked up a first down before Flacco tossed a short pass to Anquan Boldin, who ran the final 20 yards for a 35-yard touchdown.

NOTES: Former Ravens kicker Matt Stover was inducted into the team’s Ring of Honor during a halftime ceremony. … Ravens LB Jarret Johnson made his 74th consecutive start, breaking the franchise record previously held by Michael McCrary and Jamie Sharper. … Baltimore has won seven straight at home and 15 of 16.

BALTIMORE – The Cincinnati Bengals have surprised quite a few people with their impressive start this season. The Baltimore Ravens are not among those on the list.

Cincinnati went 4-12 last year and still beat the Ravens. Baltimore is 5-4 in its last nine regular-season games against Pittsburgh and 3-6 against the Bengals.

So don’t go telling the Ravens (6-3) that Sunday’s showdown for first place in the AFC North is an unexpected development.

“I knew they were always on the brink of being a good team,” Baltimore linebacker Terrell Suggs said. “Now they’re winning games.”

Suggs is the Ravens’ career sacks leader, but he didn’t have one last year against Cincinnati (6-3). On Sunday he will be chasing quarterback Andy Dalton, whose 14 touchdown passes over the first nine games is the most by a rookie since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger.

Four different Cincinnati receivers have at least 26 catches and two touchdowns, most notably A.J. Green (41 receptions, six TDs). Green’s return from a right knee injury sustained in last week’s 24-17 loss to the Steelers won’t be determined until game time, but coach Marvin Lewis still has plenty of options to send at the renowned Baltimore defence he ruled from 1996-2001.

“They’ve got some good weapons over there,” Suggs said. “This team is not only dangerous, but they’re special. Marvin Lewis knows that. They’re playing with a lot of confidence. We definitely have some work to do, especially after last week.”

Ah, last week. Coming off an uplifting win in Pittsburgh, the Ravens inexplicably lost at Seattle to tumble out of first place.

“We lost a game. Nobody feels good about it, but at the same time, we can’t really ride that wave and be on emotional highs and lows,” quarterback Joe Flacco said. “We have to get ready to play another game — a very important game.”

The winner climbs into a first-place tie with Pittsburgh, and the Ravens own the tiebreaker with the Steelers. The Bengals can ill afford to drop into third place with an 0-1 record against each of the top two teams.

“I think that’s really key, that (the Ravens) have kind of put their best foot forward already in the division by beating the Steelers twice,” Lewis said. “So for Pittsburgh and us and Cleveland … we’re all kind of playing uphill to the Ravens right now. This is a big football game that way. If you want to win your division, you’ve got to win the division games.”

Cincinnati is 4-1 on the road this season, but this will be its toughest test to date. The Ravens have won six in a row at home and 14 of 15.

“That’s our challenge, to win again on the road,” Lewis said. “We know that, like some places we’ve played this year, it can get loud. But we’ve got to do what we’ve got to do — be efficient on offence and be exact on defence. Then it just comes down to playing football.”

Cincinnati’s six wins are against teams with a combined 22-36 record, but the Bengals feel no need to defend themselves after their strong showing in defeat against Pittsburgh.

“It was tough that we ended up losing, but we were in the game the whole time,” said Dalton, who brought Cincinnati back from an early 14-0 deficit. “And so, we do have confidence we’re going to be in a lot of these games.”

After facing the mighty defence of the Steelers, Dalton now must rebound against a unit similarly stocked with veteran talent.

“It seems like when you talk about Baltimore and you talk about their defence, you talk about Ray Lewis you talk about Ed Reed,” he said. “It’s going to be fun to get a chance to play them.”

Although Dalton has been intercepted nine times, the Bengals have lost only one fumble and own a plus-3 turnover differential.

“I think that they’re winning in the same way they played last year,” Ravens coach John Harbaugh said. “They’re just doing it a little bit better in the sense that they’ve really protected the football. That’s probably the No. 1 key. They’re playing excellent defence and they’re moving the football. They are a well-rounded football team.”

It’s nothing Harbaugh hasn’t seen before from Cincinnati.

“They’ve beaten us plenty of times. We’ve always had a ton of respect for the Bengals,” he said. “It’s a big rivalry game for us. It’s one of the toughest games we play every single year. One of the most physical games we play, and that’s what we’re gearing up for.”

Baltimore has won its last 11 games following a loss — the longest current streak in the NFL — and is 14-4 in that situation during Harbaugh’s three-year tenure. Ravens fans lamented the defeat the Seattle for days, but the players quickly went into bounce-back mode.

“It hasn’t been difficult,” Suggs said. “We’re all professionals here.”

OWINGS MILLS, Md. (AP) — Baltimore Ravens middle linebacker Ray Lewis isn’t expected to play in Sunday’s game against Cincinnati because of a toe injury that has prevented him from practicing all week.

Citing Lewis’ toughness, Ravens coach John Harbaugh refused to rule out the two-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year against the Bengals.

Lewis visited a South Florida specialist Thursday, who confirmed the damage to his toe suffered in a loss to the Seattle Seahawks.

Lewis has started 57 consecutive games, a streak dating back to December 2007. Lewis, 37, leads the Ravens with 68 tackles, also getting two sacks, one interception and two forced fumbles this season.

The Pittsburgh Steelers (7-3) got just what they needed to jump back into first place in the AFC North. They beat the Cincinnati Bengals (6-3) on their home field (again) and then watched the Baltimore Ravens (6-3) fall apart (again). Heading into a much-needed bye week, the Steelers are looking down at the rest of the AFC North, holding a half game lead on the two contenders. (The 3-6 Cleveland Browns are out of this race.)

Fending off hungry tigers

The Bengals came into the game as one of the good surprises of the first half of the season. With a tenacious defense and the “Rookie Connection” of QB Andy Dalton(notes) and WR A.J. Green(notes), the Bengals had done enough to win five straight. At 6-2, even their often-disappointed fans might have felt a glimmer of hope. But the Bengals had not played either the Steelers or the Ravens.

The Steelers showed no ill effects from the last second loss at home against the Ravens. The offense took the ball into the end zone on the their first two possessions, displaying their wide array of weapons. Although a tipped ball interception and a revival of the Rookie Connection got the Bengals back into the game, the Steelers did not fold or crumble. They just kept to business. In the third quarter, the Bengals tied the game at 17 when Dalton made a great, under-pressure TD throw to Jermaine Gresham(notes). But the Steelers drove 81 yards on their next possession, and Rashard Mendenhall(notes) scored his second TD of the day, a 9 yard romp that showed a tired defense. The Bengals had four chances to score in the fourth quarter, but punted twice and threw two interceptions. After the last interception, the Steelers earned two first downs and ran out the clock. No last second heroics allowed. The Bengals were not laughable, but they were not in the Steelers’ class either.

Ravens fall flat

The Baltimore Ravens are too psychologically weak to be champions. They crumbled again a week after winning an emotional game against their arch-rivals, the Steelers. In week two, they were whipped by the physical, but mediocre Tennessee Titans. This time, they lost to the lousy Seattle Seahawks. The Ravens signature defense looked average again, letting Marshawn Lynch(notes) run through them for 167 all-purpose yards. Instead of stepping up to control the AFC North, the Ravens let the Steelers back in. The Ravens will now have to fight to keep pace with the Steelers. They own the head-to-head tie-breaker against the Steelers, but they just used up their margin for error.

Now the schedule gets interesting! The AFC North race will be featured even as the Steelers take their Thanksgiving bye week. The Bengals travel to M&T Bank Stadium to face the humiliated Ravens on Sunday, November 20. The winner will keep pace with the Steelers (the Ravens would lead by virtue of their tie-breaker; the Bengals would be behind the Steelers). But the Ravens/Bengals loser will fall off the pace and face a tough uphill battle to make the playoffs. The Steelers don’t play until after Thanksgiving. For now, I will sit back, be thankful for first place, and enjoy the desperate struggle between the Ravens and Bengals. I hope they beat the stuffing out of each other.

The Baltimore Ravens and Seattle Seahawks will meet up on Sunday, Nov. 13 for a game that most analysts feel is almost too easy for the Ravens. The logic would dictate that the Ravens are easily favored to win this game, and even though the Seahawks are playing at home they will get called severe underdogs.

If the Seahawks passing attack can do better and Marshawn Lynch(notes) can prove his game against the Cowboys on Nov. 6 wasn’t a fluke, this game could turn into an upset. Both of those points are big question marks, especially because the Seahawks have failed to stay consistent on offense at any point this year. If Lynch and Tarvaris Jackson(notes) can have a good game on the same day though, the Ravens could head home very frustrated.

The big advantage for Baltimore, just like in recent years, is a defense that ranks among the best in the NFL. The Ravens rank second in the NFL in how many points the team gives up (16.3 per game). The team also gives up just 280 yards per game, which is also second best in the league. That is a miniscule number, and it shows how difficult it is for any offense to find a rhythm. That probably means it is twice has hard for Seattle, and that everyone is going to have to play better in Week 10 to get this done.

The Ravens are now in the driver’s seat in the AFC North, but must keep winning games to stay in first place. Trying to hold off the Cincinnati Bengals and the Pittsburgh Steelers for the rest of the year isn’t going to get any easier, and that makes it important to win games against teams that are just 2-6. The Steelers took care of Seattle earlier this year (24-0), so the bar has already been set for what Baltimore has to do.

The kickoff for the Nov. 13 game is at 1:05 p.m. PT, and the Seattle crowd has to become a factor early to help keep this game close. Succeeding at staying within striking distance may turn into the game plan, and then the Seahawks have to hope for good games from Jackson, Lynch and even Sidney Rice(notes) to put this one in the win column.

Casey Hampton suggested this week that the Steelers have the edge on the Baltimore Ravens because they have a better deep passing game.

The Ravens tried to counter that in April by drafting one of the best cornerbacks available, Jimmy Smith of Colorado, with the 11th overall pick. Smith is big at 6 feet 2, 210 pounds, and he has been clocked in a reasonably fast 4.47 seconds in the 40. Word from Baltimore is he will make his first pro start Sunday in his first game against the Steelers.

The Steelers have some young receivers who can fly.

“I’m not worried about him,” said one of them, Mike Wallace. “He needs to worry about us.”

Wallace has 4.3 speed and has led the AFC in each of the past two seasons with averages of 19.4 yards (2009) and 21.0 yards (’10) per catch. Emmanuel Sanders runs a 4.4, and Antonio Brown looks to be even faster than his 4.47 clocking coming out of school. Smith will be tested deep early in his NFL career.

“He just needs to just be ready,” Wallace said, “because we’re going to be coming at him.”

Wallace has two big-play seasons behind him, so his puny three catches for 19 yards in this preseason prompted no concerns. On the other hand, Brown has been sensational, averaging 25.6 yards on nine catches this summer, three for touchdowns — one of 77 yards.

The Steelers are expected to test that Ravens secondary with the rookie Smith at cornerback Sunday.

“Man, we can take our shots deep on anybody,” Wallace said. “We don’t discriminate. It doesn’t matter who it is. Anybody can get it.”

Redman remembers it well

The last time he stepped on M&T Bank Stadium field in Baltimore, Isaac Redman was a little-known backup halfback from nearby Bowie State. By the time he stepped off, he may have helped save the Steelers season.

Redman returns to Baltimore, near where he played his small-college football, lugging a bigger role in the Steelers offense to open the season and memories from the biggest play of his young career.

“I still watch it on YouTube once in a while,” Redman said. “It was a big play.”

The only one bigger Dec. 5 in Baltimore came a few plays earlier, when Troy Polamalu blitzed off the corner, hit quarterback Joe Flacco and caused a fumble that put the Steelers back in a game that was seemingly lost with 3:13 left.

With 2:58 to go, however, they still were nine yards away, and it was third-and-goal. The Steelers trailed by four, so they needed a touchdown. Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger took the snap, saw the blitz, read the “hot” route and flipped a quick, short pass over the middle to Redman, who made safety Dawan Landry miss initially and broke a few tackles getting into the end zone with 2:51 left.

That touchdown for a 13-10 victory might have made the difference between the Steelers and Ravens winning the AFC North and, ultimately, the AFC.

“Without that play, who knows how things would have ended up the rest of the season?” Redman said. “Lose to them, lose the division, not having the homefield advantage — that really, really, really sparked that Super Bowl run.”

Redman wasn’t bragging, merely saying.

“Everything still seems like a blur. I knew it was ‘hot’ and I had a chance to beat the first guy, and kind of just wouldn’t be denied. It was like ‘Ain’t nobody tackling me.’ “

Redman has played that way most of the time since he arrived from Bowie as an unheralded, undrafted rookie in 2009. He has earned a larger role and said he was told he will get a series each half, do the short-yardage stuff everywhere but on the goal line (when Rashard Mendenhall stays in) and play a lot on third downs.

47 percent of ESPN readers currently say the Steelers will win the AFC North.

47 percent of ESPN readers currently say the Steelers will win the AFC North. 29 percent say it will be the Baltimore Ravens, which makes sense – the Steelers will depend on a bunch of older players this year, and it’s easy to imagine that a few guys will get hurt and the Steelers will get a couple of bad breaks, while Joe Flacco and company take a step forward. (Not that a 12-4 team like the 2010 Ravens needs to take much of a step forward to contend yet again.) As annoying as the Ravens are, I think picking them to win the division would be a fairly easy decision to justify.

That leaves 17 percent for the Cleveland Browns and seven percent for the Cincinnati Bengals. The Browns are a fun team, but not one that’s yet in a class with the Steelers and Ravens. As for the Bengals, I can only really assume that’s Bengals fans voting.
