The Baltimore Ravens finished the 2011 season with a 12-4 record, earning themselves a first round bye in the playoffs. The Ravens dominated their AFC North counterparts, winning all six games, including their games with future possible playoff opponents, Pittsburgh and Cincinnati. In terms of fantasy stars, the Ravens had several, but who are the biggest surprise and disappointments, and which star can say they were the Ravens 2011 fantasy MVP?

MVP – Ray Rice

The fourth-year back from Rutgers continues to improve each season and is now known as one of the best running backs in the NFL. He accumulated more than 2,000 yards from scrimmage this season and scored 15 touchdowns. On the ground, he rushed for 1,364 yards, while he made 76 receptions for 704 yards. It was his third straight season of rushing for more than 1,200 yards and earning more than 550 in the passing game. He is an easy one of the top three running backs off the board, especially in PPR leagues.

Biggest Surprise – Torrey Smith

The rookie from Maryland had a solid season, lining up opposite of Anquan Boldin. He made 50 catches for 841 yards and scored seven touchdowns. With other rookie studs like Victory Cruz, A.J. Green and Julio Jones getting all the notoriety, Smith constantly had solid performances without getting the same recognition. That is something that will change, especially if he has a great run in the playoffs. As a second-round draft pick, Smith wasn’t expected to be the second receiver, but an injury to Lee Evans forced him to that role and it is a spot he will not be moving from anytime soon.

Biggest Disappointment – Joe Flacco

While Flacco still had a solid season, throwing for 3,610 yards and 20 touchdowns, he could have done a lot more for this offense. He threw 12 interceptions and lost six fumbles and continues to struggle to improve his game from when he burst onto the pro scene in 2008. A year ago, he had the best season of his career, but failed to live up to the expectations his past success have made for him. With their stellar defense and Rice controlling the offense, Flacco doesn’t necessarily need to do more, but if he wants to hear his name mentioned with the best, he needs to.

With Tebow completing 6 of 22 passes for 60 yards and a game-sealing interception, Denver (8-8) claimed a first-round home game by virtue of a tiebreaker over Oakland and San Diego and will host Pittsburgh next weekend.

The Raiders’ loss also pushed the Bengals (9-7) into the playoffs as the sixth seed even though Cincinnati’s comeback fell short against Baltimore. Cincinnati will go on the road to play Houston (10-6), the No. 3 seed, in the first round.

With the Ravens (12-4) winning, the result of Pittsburgh’s game against Cleveland was all but meaningless. The Steelers (12-4) wound up beating their AFC North rival, 13-9, and are the No. 5 seed, but lost the tiebreaker to Baltimore, which swept the season series from the Steelers.

Baltimore didn’t have its game in hand until the final play, when Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton’s desperation pass fell incomplete as time expired.

Earlier in the afternoon, the New England Patriots secured the No. 1 seed in the AFC, and home-field advantage throughout the playoffs, with a 49-21 victory over Buffalo. Quarterback Tom Brady passed for 338 yards and three touchdowns to rally New England from a three-touchdown deficit as the Patriots scored 49 consecutive points. The Patriots (13-3) finished the regular season with eight wins in a row, and Brady’s 5,235 yards passing were the second most in NFL history for one season.

While much of the AFC picture unfolded late in the afternoon, all but one of the NFC playoff teams were settled by the early games. A night game between the New York Giants and the Dallas Cowboys would decide the NFC East champion and No. 4 seed.

The top-seeded Green Bay Packers (15-1), who clinched the No. 1 seed and a first-round bye last week, beat the Detroit Lions 45-41, despite five touchdowns and 520 yards passing by Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford,

The loss, coupled with Atlanta’s 45-24 win over Tampa Bay, made Detroit (10-6) the sixth seed. Detroit will play at New Orleans (13-3) in the first round. The Saints clobbered Carolina, 45-17, behind five touchdowns and 389 yards passing from quarterback Drew Brees, who finished the season with an NFL-record 5,476 yards passing. But the Saints drew the third seed when San Francisco (13-3) outlasted St. Louis, 34-27, to claim a first-round bye as the No. 2 seed and NFC West champion.

The fifth-seeded Falcons (10-6) will visit Dallas or New York in the first round.

The Cleveland Browns suffered another disappointing heartbreak against the Baltimore Ravens on Christmas Eve (12/24/11). The end of the first half certainly has fans scratching their heads

The Cleveland Browns suffered another disappointing heartbreak against the Baltimore Ravens on Christmas Eve (12/24/11). The end of the first half certainly has fans scratching their heads. Why the Browns did not attempt a field goal is beyond comprehension. Browns’s coach Pat Shurmur looked like he was going to explode when the team did not go for a field goal.

Shurmur is saying that he is responsible for the communication breakdowns that happened throughout the game. However, speaking of the particular play at the end of the first half, Shurmur said, “I never would have called a run in that situation with that much time.”

Seneca Wallace took the field as quarterback for the game because Colt McCoy is still out with his concussion. Wallace really looked a lot better last week. He had a few good passes in today’s game, like the excellent touchdown pass to Evan Moore, but he seemed far less confident in this game than he did in the Arizona game.

Wallace has been in the NFL for nine seasons, but he really seemed to be carrying a rookie confidence around with him today. This is the thing that the Browns do not need, especially when playing a team with the talent of the Ravens.

Going into the second half with no points on the board looked really terrible. Then, finally Josh Cribbs saved the day by running an 84-yard touchdown off of a punt. It was a truly remarkable play. This play was not a game-saver, but it definitely re-energized the Browns and gave the fans a little hope and confidence.

Should we even discuss the fourth quarter? Specifically that play where Wallace passed to Hillis when they should have just kicked the ball. This was another head-scratching play that is becoming all too characteristic of the Browns.

Then, with two minutes to go in the game, Phil Taylor just had to go offsides. The Browns had one more chance to actually do something, but him going offsides completely eliminated their chances of a last ditch effort. Had he not gone offsides, the Browns would have had two minutes (I know not much, but at least it would have been something) to at least attempt to score a touchdown.

The Browns will take on the Pittsburgh Steelers for their last game. If they expect to add another win to their record, they are going to have to stop with the careless mistakes and put forth more focus.

Browns left tackle Joe Thomas can’t think of anyone he’d rather spend Christmas Eve with than Ravens linebacker Terrell Suggs.

Suggs always gives Thomas his best battles of the season, and Thomas considers him one of the best — if not the best — outside linebacker in the NFL.

“We’ve got to make sure it’s not the Terrell Suggs show,” Thomas said. “He’s going to make his tackles, he’s going to get a sack every now and then, but you’ve got to do whatever you can, whether it’s doubles, chips, run-action, play-action, you’ve got to make it a tough day — otherwise he’s going to make it tough on you.”

In the first meeting Dec. 4, a 24-10 Ravens win, Suggs had four tackles, one sack, two tackles for loss and a pass broken up.

“I think we did a pretty decent job, but he’s a guy that you don’t really shut out in a game,” said Thomas, a four-time Pro Bowler. “You just try to minimize his impact because he’s such a good player that he’s going to get his plays. You’ve just got to make sure that he doesn’t take over the game. That’s kind of the key with him.”

Suggs has 13 sacks this season, tied for fifth in the NFL and tied for third in Ravens history. It tops his previous career high of 12 in 2003. His 13 career sacks against the Browns in 17 games are his second most against any team. His seven forced fumbles against Cleveland are his tops against any team.

“He’s right up at the top of the class, there’s no question,” Thomas said. “He’s such a disruptive force — run and pass. . . . That’s why he fits so well with the Ravens because they like those guys that are kind of the jack of all trades.”

When the Cleveland Browns take on the Baltimore Ravens on Saturday, December 24, 2011, they will be doing it with Seneca Wallace at quarterback. There is a good chance he will play the role of QB in the final game against the Pittsburgh Steelers the following week as well.

Colt McCoy is still out because of the concussion he sustained due to the head on collision courtesy of James Harrison. He is still having recurring symptoms from this injury and until he is fully recovered from this injury, it is simply not safe for him – or the other players – for him to be out on the field. McCoy will not travel with the Browns either. He will stay home and rest and focus on recovering.

Since Wallace is going to be taking over the role of quarterback for the remainder of the season, he has to start acting like a starting quarterback. According to his teammates. He is falling into the role well.

“I think he’s more vocal in the locker room and on the field,” said Joe Thomas, a left tackle for the Browns. “When you’re the starter, you’re the coach on the field, not only calling plays but getting everybody lined up correctly, making sure the formation’s are correct, the personnel is right. You’re kind of the designated rah-rah guy. When things are going south, you’re the guy that needs to stand up and get everybody in a positive direction.”

Wallace has acknowledged that he is just the backup quarterback and that he is afraid to overstep his boundaries. However, he needs to lose this mentality as it could hold him back. He is not the backup at this moment. He is the starter for the remainder of the season and he needs to think like a starter. He has played in nine NFL seasons and has earned his time on the field.

In the Arizona game, Wallace showed that he has what it takes to make plays. He definitely gave the Browns some new energy. The only thing the Browns need to work on right now is keeping that energy throughout the entire game because that energy definitely faded by the end of the third quarter. If Wallace can keep throwing good passes and keep his men energized, the Browns just might have a chance to defeat the Ravens.

BALTIMORE (WJZ)—Ravens fans are hoping for a win this Christmas Eve. But what does the holiday mean for the coaches and players?

Jessica Kartalija finds the Christmas spirit is alive and well.

This holiday season, the Ravens say playing in the NFL is a gift in itself.

“Too many guys can’t be a NFL player, so you’ve got to feel blessed,” Pernell McPhee, defensive lineman.

The team says Christmas is time spent with their biggest fans.

“It’s a very important time to spend with family and friends and to give back, most importantly to people who are less fortunate,” said Michael Oher.

“It’s about family, you get gifts, and you really want people to show expression of love for everybody,” said Chris Carr.

“Christmas to me means the celebration of the birth of our lord and savior, Jesus Christ. That’s what it means. No greater celebration than that,” said Coach John Harbaugh.

Memories of Christmas past are kicking in for punter Sam Koch.

“We used to—on Christmas Eve–go to my grandma’s, and it was a way to get the family together and see each other,” said Koch said.

“When I think of Christmas, I think of a time to be around family, and relax and yeah, think about how fortunate we are and try and help other people out there who might not be in the same situation we are,” said Joe Flacco.

For Matt Birk, his kids are the center of attention.

“Now, with six young kids at home, there’s nothing like Christmas morning,” Birk said.

Ravens rookie Torrey Smith is looking forward to starting a new holiday tradition.

“It’s a time to realize how thankful you are for everything from family, to football to life in general. I’m excited, and it’s the first time I’m on my own and my family is coming to Baltimore to celebrate it with me,” Smith said.

Every player we spoke with expressed their appreciation of being in the NFL, saying it’s their responsibility to help others less fortunate.

But the Ravens are coming off a miserable performance last Sunday in San Diego, a game in which the Chargers scored on their first five possessions and never punted in a 34-14 rout.

“It’s the NFL. It can be very humbling,” Pagano said Wednesday. “That’s why you take it week to week. Keep it on the highway, we say. Never too high and never too low. We know we’ve got to get over it and move on.”

Pagano and the Ravens (10-4) have turned their attention toward beating Cleveland (4-10) on Saturday to stay on course to win the AFC North.

“There were spots where I could have done a better job in helping these guys out,” he said. “So we go back to work and fix the things that needed to be fixed.”

After spending three years working with the Ravens secondary, the 51-year-old Pagano took command of the defense in January after Greg Mattison left to become defensive coordinator at Michigan.

Pagano calls his new post “a dream come true.”

“If you ask anyone given this opportunity, they’d tell you the same thing,” he said. “We’ve got great assistant coaches, great guys to work with, great players, great leadership, a great organization. I was just in the right place at the right time. I’m very fortunate.

“It’s been more highs than lows and it’s been exciting watching these guys play. It’s been a great experience to this point, but our goal is to get to (Indianapolis, site of the Super Bowl) and be the No. 1 defense in the league. If we don’t accomplish that, it will be a disappointing year as far as I’m concerned.”

Perhaps, but no one in the locker room would blame Pagano if the Ravens fall short of expectations.

“I love playing for coach. I have a ton of respect for the dude,” linebacker Terrell Suggs said. “He definitely gave us our swagger back. He’s a very good chess player. You got to win the chess match. You got to be a strategist. Chuck’s been doing a good job.”

Pagano broke into the coaching ranks as a graduate assistant at Southern California in 1984. He has studied the art of defense for well over two decades, knowledge that enabled him to come up with a multitude of alignments that turned this Baltimore defense into a swarming, unpredictable and relentless crew.

“Chuck is unorthodox,” Suggs said. “He’s like The Joker. You never really expect what he’s going to do, and everything has a motive.”

His players consider Pagano to be just one of the guys.

“What makes him good? He relates to the players a whole lot,” Ravens defensive end Cory Redding said. “He’s almost like a player in a D-coordinator’s position. The guy has so much fun with us. He treats you like more than a player. It’s like we’re his sons. He wants us to do well. He keeps it fresh. He knows everybody’s strengths and puts them in position to make plays.”

With the exception of Mattison, every previous Ravens defensive coordinator has gone on to become an NFL head coach. Marvin Lewis, Mike Nolan and Rex Ryan made the step up, and it’s quite possible Pagano may one day follow suit.

“Absolutely,” Ravens linebacker Paul Kruger said. “Chuck has a leadership quality about him. He’s humble but he also knows when to take the reins and take charge. He doesn’t try to dominate you in every meeting. He’s just a coach that knows exactly how players are and what direction they need. He’s a hell of a coach and I really think he’ll be a head coach one day.”

Pagano has been thinking of that moment since he was a young boy.

“When I was a kid growing up, my dad being a football coach, he asked the same question of all the assistants that he ever hired: ‘Is your goal to be a head football coach?’ He always said if somebody had answered him, ‘Not really, I’m OK just being a position coach,’ then I don’t think he really wanted him on his staff,” Pagano said. “Because he wanted ambitious guys.

“I think if you ask anybody they’d say yeah. That would be something you always work for and toward. But for now, my focus and our focus is on the Cleveland Browns. Period.”

The Baltimore Ravens are in control of their destiny in the AFC North and
the race for a first-round bye. Maintaining that edge, though, will likely be
difficult if they turn in another lackluster performance.

A matchup with the ailing Cleveland Browns on Saturday would appear to give
the Ravens a good chance to stay on track for the division crown and the No. 2
seed, with Baltimore having dominated the series of late.

The Ravens (10-4) have put themselves in control with a sweep of division
rival Pittsburgh and a victory over Houston on Oct. 16, giving them a leg up on
those 10-4 teams.

Baltimore, though, missed out last week on a chance to move ahead of the
Steelers and Texans, both of whom lost. With a playoff berth already wrapped up,
the Ravens were blown out 34-14 in San Diego.

Pittsburgh fell 20-3 to San Francisco on Monday night, and Houston was upset
28-13 at home by Carolina.

“It’s a gift, but we wish we didn’t have to get it that way,” Ravens
linebacker Terrell Suggs said. “We’ve just got to take care of business.”

Baltimore, winner of nine in a row at home dating to last December, appears
to have a good chance to do that with Cleveland (4-10) visiting M&T Bank
Stadium. The Ravens have won seven straight over the Browns, tied for the
longest win streak against an opponent in team history. They’ve also won seven
consecutive games over the New York Jets.

Baltimore’s latest victory in the series came Dec. 4 as Ray Rice ran for a
career-high 204 yards in a 24-10 win. Ricky Williams added 76 yards rushing as
the Ravens piled up 290 on the ground.

Cleveland has made adjustments as it looks to slow down Rice. The Browns
allowed 147 rushing yards in a 14-3 loss to Pittsburgh on Dec. 8, but limited
Arizona to 74 in a 20-17 overtime defeat last week.

“The goal (is) to make sure we minimize his effect on the game,” coach Pat
Shurmur told the team’s website. “We’ve done some things schematically to help
us, and we just keep emphasizing that everyone has to play better. I’ve seen
that.”

At 3-4 on the road, winning this game might prove vital to Baltimore’s
chances of accomplishing its regular-season goals. The Ravens close out their
schedule at Cincinnati on Jan. 1.

“We’re playing two teams that know us very well, two division foes, so it’s
going to be interesting,” Suggs said. “We’ve got to get back to doing what we do
best, and that’s playing Ravens football.”

Suggs, who has a career-high 13 sacks, chased down Colt McCoy for one of
those, but the Browns quarterback likely won’t play this week. McCoy has been
out since taking a hit to the head against Pittsburgh earlier this month.

The controversy surrounding Cleveland’s failure to check McCoy for a
concussion has led the NFL to put certified trainer in every press box. McCoy
still had symptoms of a concussion Wednesday and has yet to be cleared to return
to the field.

“Like anybody that wants to play, he’s anxious to get back out there,”
Shurmur said. “But he understands there is a process that you have to go through
before he will be able to play again.”

With McCoy out, Seneca Wallace is expected to start again after he threw for
226 yards and a touchdown versus the Cardinals. His 76-yard scoring pass to Greg
Little gave the Browns a 17-7 third-quarter lead, but they couldn’t hold it and
suffered a season-high fourth consecutive defeat and sixth in a row on the road.

Wallace’s one start against the Ravens came in the team’s most recent trip
to Baltimore on Sept. 26, 2010. He threw for 141 yards and a TD in a 24-17
defeat, while counterpart Joe Flacco passed for three touchdowns.

Flacco has eight TDs and one interception over his last six matchups with
the Browns, who might need a strong performance from Peyton Hillis to help snap
their losing streak.

In his fourth game since returning from an injured hamstring, Hillis ran for
a season-high 99 yards and a touchdown last week. He rushed for a then-career
high 144 yards in Baltimore last September but has been held to a combined 80
over the past two matchups.

The Ravens might have a new kicker for this game as Billy Cundiff is dealing
with a sore left calf. On Wednesday, the team signed Shayne Graham, an 11-year
veteran who has played for six other teams.

That’s all for today guys, i’ll be back to blog you tomorrow.

That prompted the Ravens to add Graham, who worked out with Baltimore last week. Graham has played for six teams, most recently the Miami Dolphins earlier this season.

Graham, 34, was cut in training camp by the Ravens last summer.

“The positive thing about bringing Shayne is that we know him and he knows us,” special teams coach Jerry Rosburg said. “He’s obviously an NFL-caliber kicker. We knew that when he was here and he’s proven that since he’s been gone.”

Cundiff made the Pro Bowl in 2010 but has missed nine field goals this year and is 1 for 6 beyond 50 yards. Baltimore is chasing the AFC North title, so it’s quite possible Graham will be pressed into action Saturday against Cleveland.

“He’s a real plus for us because we know we’re bringing in a guy that is not only a quality NFL kicker, but has been in the NFL environment and understands playoff caliber football at the end of the season,” Rosburg said. “We expect him to come in here and add that veteran experience.”

Cundiff remains on the 53-man roster. Baltimore placed linebacker Chavis Williams (foot) on injured reserve to make room for Graham, an 11-year veteran.

“It’s nice to actually come into this locker room,” Graham said. “A lot of these guys were in camp when I was here a couple of years ago. A lot of the guys are familiar with me.There’s a lot of good guys here, so it’s a real smooth transition for me. Having the operation here, the snapper and holder, those guys are phenomenal. So, I couldn’t ask to be in a better position or be around a better bunch of guys.”

Cundiff did not practice Wednesday and Graham kicked well, but there are still no guarantees Graham will get the call against the Browns.

“We added him to our roster just to make sure we had a kicker,” Rosburg said.

“If they call on me, I’ll be ready,” Graham said. “I really don’t know what the expectations are. I hope (Cundiff) gets healthy as soon as he can. All I can control is what I’m asked to do. If I’m asked to go out and play, then I go out and play and play my best to help these guys win. If it’s for one week, it’s for one week. If it’s for two, it’s two.”

The Ravens don’t need uncertainty at kicker with the postseason rapidly approaching, but they couldn’t afford to take a wait-and-see approach with Cundiff.

“We’re just trying to win a football game this week,” Rosburg said. “That’s what really important to us.”

OWINGS MILLS, Md. (AP)—The Baltimore Ravens dipped into the past Wednesday
to address an ongoing problem with their kicking game, signing Shayne Graham as
a possible replacement for injured Billy Cundiff.

Cundiff has a sore left calf and has struggled this month. He missed a
36-yard field goal Sunday night in a 34-14 loss to San Diego and is 2 for 5 in
December.

That prompted the Ravens to add Graham, who worked out with Baltimore last

SAN DIEGO — Before the opening kickoff Sunday night, the Baltimore Ravens knew that the Tennessee Titans and New York Jets had both lost, meaning that for a franchise-record fourth consecutive year, they were going to the playoffs.

But that’s never what this regular season has been about for these Ravens. Their goal has always been to win the AFC North and get home-field advantage for the playoffs. But thanks to an abysmal performance where the Ravens allowed San Diego Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers to go down the field with little resistance all night, that goal just got a lot harder to attain.

The humbling 34-14 loss at Snapdragon Stadium before an announced 67,242 conjured all the old concerns, from the Ravens’ inability to deal with a quarterback with a quick release and dangerous receivers, to Joe Flacco’s continued inconsistency to the team’s struggles on the road.

The last one has become perhaps the biggest concern with the Ravens (10-4) now needing help to win the division and get a home playoff game. The Pittsburgh Steelers could take first place of the AFC North outright with a victory Monday night over the San Francisco 49ers.

The Chargers, who have won three straight to sit one game back of the Denver Broncos in the AFC West, scored on their first three drives to take a 17-7 halftime lead and then put the game away with two touchdowns in the third quarter.

San Diego scored 27 straight points before Flacco hit rookie wide receiver Torrey Smith on a late 36-yard touchdown pass.

Rivers connected for a 28-yard touchdown pass with Malcom Floyd, who beat rookie Jimmy Smith in the right corner to give the Chargers a 24-7 lead. Smith and fellow cornerback Cary Williams were picked on all night by Rivers.

Flacco followed the Floyd touchdown by throwing his first of two third-quarter interceptions, setting up a three-yard touchdown run by Ryan Mathews to give San Diego a 31-7 lead.

Rivers, who wasn’t sacked once by the team that leads the league in that category, was 17 for 23 for 270 yards and a touchdown. The Chargers’ 34 points were seven more than Baltimore has given up in a game this season. Flacco was 23 for 34 for 226 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions.

(Sports Network) – The Baltimore Ravens have consistently been one of the
better teams in the NFL since John Harbaugh took over as head coach in 2008,
but the club has never won five straight games during his four-year tenure.

That could change with a victory this Sunday night over the hosting San Diego
Chargers, and it would also punch the Ravens’ ticket to a fourth straight
playoff appearance.

Baltimore does figure to have its hands full with a San Diego club that is
fighting for its chance at a playoff spot, a lifeline it would like to extend
with a third straight victory this weekend.

The Ravens easily handled the winless Colts, 24-10, last Sunday to win for the
sixth time in seven games and keep pace with Pittsburgh for first place in the
AFC North. Baltimore and the Steelers are two of four teams in the AFC that
hold 10-3 records, but the Ravens do hold the inside track for the division
crown thanks to a pair of victories over Pittsburgh this season.

The AFC South champion Houston Texans and East-leading New England Patriots are
also 10-3.

“The AFC is very competitive,” said Ravens running back Ray Rice. “We have
control of our own destiny. We’re in our driver’s seat, but at the same time,
other teams are playing good football as well. So you hope a team drops one. We
don’t say help because we feel like we control our own destiny. As long as we
keep winning, we’ll be fine.”

Baltimore has won 17 of its past 18 at home, but brings a 3-3 road record in
2011 into this meeting. Still, the Ravens can win five straight in the regular
season for the first time since Oct. 29-Nov. 26, 2006, which was also the only
other season that the Ravens ever posted an 11-3 mark after 14 games.

Baltimore can officially lock up a playoff spot with a victory in this game,
but can also get in with a loss by the New York Jets and either Oakland or
Tennessee. The Ravens are also in if both the Raiders and Titans lose or tie,
but Harbaugh is only worried about what his team does on the field.

“That’s the object — just to win the next game more than anything, probably,”
the coach said on Monday. “If that happens, we pretty much know where the
chips are going to fall. So, we try to control what we can control, and
obviously we’ve got a big challenge this week.”

The Chargers wish they were in the same boat as the Ravens, but a six-game
slide from Oct. 23-Nov. 27 took such control out of their hands. San Diego has
turned things around with consecutive victories to get to 6-7 on the season,
but sit two games behind both AFC West-leading Denver and Jets, who hold the
conference’s sixth and final playoff spot.

Like the Ravens, the Chargers cruised to a victory last weekend, besting
Buffalo by a 37-10 margin. San Diego used a fake punt that set up a score and a
pick-six from safety Steve Gregory to pull away in the third quarter, while
also getting three touchdown passes from quarterback Philip Rivers.

“It was good to win a game,” Rivers said. “Win two in a row and try to keep it
rolling next week against Baltimore.”

San Diego picked up its 400th victory in franchise history and improved to
17-2 in December under head coach Norv Turner. It will be playing its final
home game of the regular season this weekend before road tests at Detroit and
Oakland.

SERIES HISTORY

The Ravens grabbed a 4-3 lead in their overall series with San Diego by virtue
of a 31-26 win in the most recent meeting between the teams, which took place
at Qualcomm Stadium in 2009. The victory was Baltimore’s fourth in five
matchups with the Chargers since 2000, with San Diego’s lone triumph during
that span a 32-14 home decision in 2007. The Chargers are 3-2 all-time as the
host in this set, however.

Turner has split four previous encounters with the Ravens as a head coach,
which includes a 1-1 mark while at the helm of the Washington Redskins from
1994-2000. Harbaugh won his only prior head-to-head battle with both the
Chargers and Turner with his team’s 2009 result.

WHEN THE RAVENS HAVE THE BALL

Baltimore put up 10 points in the first quarter last weekend versus the Colts
and never looked back on the way to posting 358 yards of offense. That was
about par for the course for the Ravens’ 14th-ranked unit (346.0 ypg), a group
that is led by talented running back Rice (1029 rushing yards, 62 receptions).
He ran for 103 yards against Indianapolis and scored his 12th total touchdown
of the season, one shy of a club single-year record. It marked the first time
that the back has run for 100 yards in consecutive games, and he also led the
Ravens with six catches. On the season, Rice leads the NFL with 1,622 yards
from scrimmage. Quarterback Joe Flacco (3122 passing yards, 15 TD, 9 INT)
threw for 227 yards with a pair of touchdowns, finding wide receiver Torrey
Smith (37 receptions, 6 TD) for a short score in the first quarter and tight
end Dennis Pitta (31 receptions, 2 TD) in the third. Flacco went over 3,000
yards passing for a third straight season, while Smith tied Jamal Lewis’ club
rookie record for touchdowns in a campaign set in 2000. Smith and Anquan Boldin
(55 receptions, 3 TD) had five catches each last week, with Boldin adding a
game-high 57 yards receiving. Baltimore has allowed just four sacks during its
four-game win streak.

The Chargers rank in the top 10 in both total defense (8th overall, 330.5 ypg)
and against the pass (7th, 201.5 ypg), but have struggled versus opposing
ground games. San Diego is giving up 128.9 yards per game in that department,
tied for 23rd in the NFL. The Bolts did hold the Bills to under 100 yards
rushing and picked off quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick twice, with safety Eric
Weddle (73 tackles, 7 INT) also grabbing a pick in addition to Gregory (47
tackles, 1 INT), who led the club with seven tackles. San Diego’s secondary,
led by corners Antoine Cason (44 tackles, 1 INT) and Quentin Jammer (41
tackles), did struggle against Bills No. 1 receiver Steve Johnson, however,
with the wideout logging four catches for 116 yards. Still, San Diego did not
allow Buffalo to score in three of the four quarters and has shut out its
opponent in five of its past six periods played. Linebacker Antwan Barnes (32
tackles, 7 sacks) had a sack versus the Bills and inside starter Takeo Spikes
(91 tackles, 1 sack) added five tackles. Fellow inside linebacker Donald Butler
(80 tackles, 1 sack, 1 INT) is one of San Diego’s top tacklers and tackle
Antonio Garay (48 tackles, 2 sacks) leads the club’s front three.

WHEN THE CHARGERS HAVE THE BALL

San Diego’s eighth-ranked offense (388.1 ypg) is coming off a 366-yard
performance and is looking to make some history this weekend. Rivers (3745
passing yards, 22 TD, 17 INT), running back Ryan Mathews and wide receiver
Vincent Jackson are all within reach of giving the club a 4,000-yard passer,
1,000-yard rusher and 1,000-yard receiver for the third time in club history,
while tight end Antonio Gates (53 receptions, 6 TD) needs five catches to
surpass Charlie Joiner (586) for the most in club history. Rivers and Gates
hooked up for two touchdowns versus the Bills, with the tight end leading the
team with seven catches for 68 yards. Jackson (53 receptions, 952 yards, 8 TD)
added five catches for 55 yards, while Mathews (943 rushing yards, 45
receptions, 4 TD) donated six catches while rushing for over 100 yards for a
third straight game. LaDainain Tomlinson was the last Charger to do so in four
straight, back in 2007. Also, Jackson is looking to become the first Chargers
wide receiver since Tony Martin in 1996 to post a 10-touchdown season. Malcom
Floyd (25 receptions, 2 TD) also serves as a top target for Rivers, while
running back Mike Tolbert (385 rushing yards, 6 TD) is a red-zone option.

The Chargers likely won’t have such an easy time moving the ball this weekend
against a Ravens defense that ranks third overall in the league (278.1 ypg),
second against the run (85.8 ypg) and third in scoring defense (15.5 ppg). With
star linebacker Ray Lewis (68 tackles, 2 sacks, 1 INT) missing the past four
games with a foot injury that could again hold him out this weekend, outside
linebacker Terrell Suggs (58 tackles, 13 sacks, 2 INT) has been on a tear.
Suggs logged three sacks versus the Colts last weekend and set a club record
with three forced fumbles, though the Ravens weren’t able to recover any of
them. He has set a new career high in sacks for as season and leads the NFL
with six forced fumbles. Suggs leads a defense that held the Colts to just 167
yards of offense, including 47 in the first half, and leads the NFL with 45
sacks. Safety Bernard Pollard (58 tackles, 2 sacks, 1 INT) had an interception
last weekend and defensive end Cory Redding (34 tackles, 4.5 sacks) also got to
the quarterback. Safety Ed Reed (43 tackles, 1 sack, 3 INT) leads a secondary
that may be without cornerback Lardarius Webb (62 tackles, 1 sack, 4 INT) due
to a toe injury, though both he and Harbaugh are hopeful he can play. If not,
rookie Jimmy Smith (6 tackles, 2 INT) would start alongside Cary Williams (62
tackles). Paul Kruger (12 tackles, 4.5 sacks) is also a pass-rush specialist
alongside inside linebacker Jameel McClain (71 tackles, 1 sack, 1 INT), who led
the Ravens with eight tackles last week.

KEYS TO THE GAME

The Ravens’ offense goes through Rice, the only player in the league with at
least 1,000 yards rushing and 500 yards receiving this season. He leads all NFL
running backs with 593 receiving yards and is looking to become the fourth
player since 1970 to post three seasons in a row with at least 1,200 rushing
yards and 500 receiving yards.

Ravens kicker Billy Cundiff made his only field goal attempt and hit all three
extra points last weekend, but was questionable to play due to a calf injury.
Cundiff didn’t handle the kickoffs during the second half due to the ailment,
something that bares watching on Sunday night.

The Chargers do have the edge in the passing game, and an injury to Webb could
open things up for Jackson and Floyd. Gates should also find some room to work
with in the Ravens secondary, while having a solid receiver out of the
backfield in Mathews will give Rivers a safe play to avoid Baltimore’s
pressure. The Ravens’ linebackers will need to watch for screens and keep an
eye on Mathews to avoid big plays.

OVERALL ANALYSIS

A pair of teams who also finish strong makes for an exciting matchup this
Sunday night. Both clubs have plenty to play for and are very similar in terms
of offense. Mathews and Rice are both playmakers, with the latter probably
holding the edge, while Rivers is likely to make more plays with his arm than
Flacco. That means the difference could come down to defense, where Baltimore
excels and can force Rivers into making some of the same mistakes that have
led to him leading the AFC in interceptions.

SAN DIEGO (AP)—Two years ago, Ray Lewis shot the gap and met Darren
Sproles head-on in the backfield on fourth-and-2 in the closing seconds to seal
the Baltimore Ravens’ 31-26 victory against the San Diego Chargers.

The Chargers hardly need to be reminded of that jarring hit. Sproles left
for New Orleans as a free agent after last season, perhaps one of the reasons
the Chargers have struggled so badly most of this season. And with their playoff
hopes barely flickering, the Chargers have to face the Ravens again, although
this time it’s Terrell Suggs who’s bringing the mayhem.

After consecutive wins against downtrodden Jacksonville and Buffalo, the
Chargers (6-7) host the Ravens (10-3), who will be assured a fourth straight
trip to the postseason if they win Sunday night. A loss would push the Chargers
to the brink of missing the playoffs for the second straight season.

“They’re as talented as any team in the league,” beleaguered Chargers
coach Norv Turner said. “They’re obviously the best defense in the league, in
my mind. They’re great on third down, they’re physical, they’re a great
pass-rushing group.”

Lewis, the Ravens’ long-time defensive leader, has missed four straight
games with an injured right toe. The Ravens, who have won those four games, hope
to have Lewis back Sunday night.

Suggs had three sacks and forced three fumbles in a 24-10 victory against
the winless Indianapolis Colts on Sunday. He also had three sacks in a 16-6
victory against the San Francisco 49ers on Thanksgiving night, when the Ravens
tied a franchise record with nine sacks.

“Suggs is a guy that I think everyone starts with,” Turner said. “They
have a number of guys that can rush the passer. The one area I think they’re
better than they were when we played them last time is they’ve probably improved
in the secondary.”

That could be bad news for Philip Rivers, who’s looked much better the last
two games.

The Ravens also have a physical offense, led by running back Ray Rice.

“They’re able to keep the ball away from you and limit the number of
opportunities you have against them,” Turner said. “It’s going to be a
physical challenge for all of our players.”

The Chargers’ 37-10 victory against the Bills on Sunday was tempered when
Tim Tebow and the Denver Broncos rallied to beat the Chicago Bears in overtime.
The Broncos are 8-5 atop the AFC West while the Oakland Raiders are 7-6.

After hosting the Ravens, the Chargers finish with road games against the
Detroit Lions and the Raiders.

Three Chargers are closing in on significant milestones.

With 582 career catches, star tight end Antonio Gates needs five receptions
to supplant Hall of Famer Charlie Joiner as the team’s all-time leading
receiver. Joiner, the Chargers’ wide receivers coach, had 586 catches from
1976-86, the final 11 seasons of his 18-year NFL career.

Rivers needs 255 yards passing for his fourth straight 4,000-yard season. He
would join Peyton Manning (1999-04 and 2006-10) and former teammate Drew Brees
(2006-11) as the only QBs in NFL history with at least four-straight 4,000-yard
seasons. Second-year pro Ryan Mathews needs 57 yards rushing for his first
1,000-yard season. Mathews has gained 100 yards in three straight games for the
first time.

winless with a 24-10 victory Sunday.

Lewis, Baltimore’s standout middle linebacker and longtime defensive leader, missed a fourth straight game with a right toe
injury. The Ravens (10-3) have won every one of those games.

“Right now I think we’re all just doing our part holding the levee until the general gets back,” Suggs said. “That’s why I
honestly think we’re playing the way we are.”

Baltimore limited the hapless Colts to 167 yards – just 53 through three quarters. Were it not for a touchdown on the game’s
final play, Indianapolis would have been held without a TD for only the second time since the 2003 season opener.

Baltimore didn’t recover any of the three fumbles that Suggs forced, but he harassed Colts quarterback
Dan Orlovsky
throughout the afternoon.

“We shut them down early, and then they had to start passing the ball,” Ravens defensive tackle
Haloti Ngata
said. “That’s when
Terrell Suggs
went crazy.”

Suggs, a movie buff, described the action this way: “It’s chaos out there. A lot is going on more than you see. It’s like
`The Matrix’ out there with a little bit of `Inception’. It’s a little bit crazy.”

      Joe Flacco
threw two touchdown passes and
Ray Rice
ran for 103 yards and a score to help the Ravens win their fourth straight and improve to 7-0 at home. Baltimore is tied with
Pittsburgh for the lead in the AFC North, but the Ravens hold the tiebreaker because of their two wins over the Steelers.

“We have control of our own destiny,” Rice said. “We’re in the driver’s seat. As long as we keep winning, we’ll be fine.”

The Ravens had lost eight straight to Indianapolis, but that was when
Peyton Manning
was healthy and at the top of his game. He has yet to play this year because of a neck injury.

Orlovsky, the third Colts quarterback to start this season, went 17 for 37 for 136 yards and an interception. He was sacked
four times and hounded throughout the game by Suggs.

“He’s as good a pass rusher as I’ve played against,” Orlovsky said of Suggs. “I can’t say anything bad about him as a football
player.”

Suggs attributed Baltimore’s success to the schemes set in place by Pagano, in his first season as Baltimore’s defensive coordinator.
To emphasize the point, Suggs sarcastically made Pagano out to be clueless.

“If anybody trying to hire a head coach, if they ask me I’m going to tell them he (stinks),” Suggs said. “He’s a terrible
coach and his players don’t love him. He don’t know what he’s doing when he’s calling a game.”

The game was far more lopsided than the final score would indicate. Baltimore led 17-3 at halftime and 24-3 in the third quarter,
and the Colts drove 76 yards in the final two minutes in a drive that ended with Orlovsky throwing a 13-yard touchdown pass
to
Jacob Tamme
as time expired.

Indianapolis has three games left in the season. If the Colts don’t win, they will join the 2008
Detroit Lions
as the only NFL team to go 0-16 in a season.

“Losing (stinks), no matter what it is,” Orlovsky said. “Whether it’s football, if it’s rock-paper, none of us like to lose.
There’s nothing fun about losing.”

Colts coach Jim Caldwell said, “We need to find a way to get our team better so we can get a victory. And not just one. We’re
running out of time.”

The Ravens needed less than five minutes to take the lead for good. After the Colts went three and out following the opening
kickoff,
Lardarius Webb
returned a punt 27 yards to the Indianapolis 40 and Flacco capped a six-play drive with an 8-yard touchdown pass to
Torrey Smith
.

Baltimore’s next march covered 66 yards over 13 plays and ended with a 36-yard field goal by
Billy Cundiff
for a 10-0 lead.

The first quarter ended with the Ravens holding a 111-10 advantage in yardage and an 8-1 lead in first downs.

Nothing changed in the second quarter. Baltimore forced a punt and Flacco went 5 for 7 for 54 yards in a 10-play drive that
ended with a 6-yard touchdown run by Rice.

Indianapolis finally got into Baltimore territory when
Joe Lefeged
returned the ensuing kickoff 51 yards. Orlovsky then completed a fourth-down pass to
Dallas Clark
, and
Adam Vinatieri
kicked a field goal to make it 17-3 late in the half.

Baltimore went ahead 24-3 with 3:41 left in the third quarter. Flacco rolled to his right and was near the sideline when he
threw a 7-yard touchdown pass to
Dennis Pitta
in the middle of the end zone.

Flacco went 23 for 31 for 227 yards and an interception.

NOTES: Suggs has a career-high 13 sacks. … The Colts have only six INTs this season. … Flacco went over 3,000 yards passing
and Rice eclipsed 1,000 yards rushing. … Smith’s TD gave him six, tying Jamal Lewis for most by a Ravens rookie. … Indy’s

      Dwight Freeney
had two sacks to go over 100 for his career.

How bad will the Indianapolis Colts lose this week? It will likely be pretty bad.

How bad will the Indianapolis Colts lose this week? It will likely be pretty bad. There is almost no chance that Indianapolis has a chance to beat the Baltimore Ravens in their week 14 matchup. The two teams are headed in opposite directions this season. Indianapolis is 0-12 on the season and appears headed for the top pick in the 2012 NFL draft. Baltimore is 9-3 on the season and is preparing for the 2011 NFL playoffs. This game should prove the direction that each team is headed.

To make matters worse, Indianapolis this week lost three significant defensive players. Cornerbacks Jerraud Powers and Terrance Johnson as well as defensive tackle Drake Nevis were all placed on injured reserve this week. Indianapolis’ cornerbacks will be very inexperienced in this game and Joe Flacco will likely look to test them downfield. Jacob Lacey is the only player remaining with any NFL experience and even he was benched earlier this season for his poor play. If Baltimore can pass the ball well, it could be a long day for the Colts.

Good news for fans is that both tight end Dallas Clark and middle linebacker Pat Angerer are expected to play. Angerer is a key to the defense and has been arguably the most consistent player on the Indianapolis defense this year. Clark has missed the last three games with a leg injury. His return will certainly help the passing game but shouldn’t do much to help win the game.

Dan Orlovsky played well last week and provided a big spark for the offense. This Baltimore defense is very good though and will provide a challenge for the inexperienced Indianapolis offensive line. The offense should try to establish Joseph Addai and build upon the recent success of Donald Brown.

In the end, these two teams are headed in different directions and Indianapolis stands no chance to win the game. This loss will surely push them to 0-13 and leave them with just three chances remaining to get a win in the 2011 season. Fans should hope that this game ends quickly and they can move on to next week where they will try for their first win this year.

Prediction: Ravens 34, Colts 10
